occupation

The Lord of the Rings is a planned Fantasy - live-action series from Patrick McKay and JD Payne , based on Tolkien's world of British author JRR Tolkien is based. However, it is not a direct adaptation of a work he has published. The series is produced by Amazon Studios . The release is announced for 2021 on Amazon's streaming service Prime Video .

action

The plot of the series is set to take place in the second age of the fictional world Middle-earth , several thousand years before the events of the first volume of the novel The Lord of the Rings, written by JRR Tolkien . The events that are described in the prologue of the novel and justify its plot fall into the second age. This includes the forging of the One Ring by the dark ruler Sauron and his defeat in the battle at the foot of Mount Doom , as a result of which the ring of power passed into the possession of Isildur and the third age began. However, the exact scope of action is not yet known.

History and staff

Several film and television studios, including Netflix , HBO and Amazon , were offered the rights to television adaptations of JRR Tolkien's works by the Tolkien heirs . Finally, Amazon secured the international television rights to Tolkien's world in November 2017 for a rumored 250 million US dollars . The studio also undertook to start production of the first season by November 2019 at the latest, otherwise the rights would expire again. In addition to Amazon Studios , the publishers of The Lord of the Rings novel HarperCollins , Tolkien Estate , Tolkien Trust and the film studio New Line Cinema are involved in the production. The latter has already produced the successful film trilogies The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit . The series is said to be available exclusively on Prime Video . A release is planned for 2021, but 2020 as the start of the first season is not excluded. Patrick McKay and JD Payne were hired as showrunners . After some speculation arose, Peter Jackson made it clear that he would not be involved in the series. However, he later offered to help if the scripts were sent to him. The deal between Amazon and the Tolkien heirs includes at least five seasons as well as the possibility for spin-offs , with the series being said to have a budget of over a billion US dollars. For this reason, a second season was officially announced in November 2019. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke explained that the authors worked in a strictly sealed-off area: the access to the Writers' Room in Santa Monica was guarded and the windows were taped. In order to be allowed to enter it, you have to go through a security check and give your fingerprint, since the entire work on the first season can be seen there openly. Several people worked on the scripts, including Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul writers Gennifer Hutchison , Helen Shang ( Dead Girls Don't Lie ), The Sopranos writer Jason Cahill , Justin Doble ( Stranger Things ) and Stephany Folsom , known for her work on the screenplay of Toy Story 4 . The long-time Game of Thrones producer and author Bryan Cogman was hired as another author and consultant for the series . Glenise Mullins will also act as an advisory writer .

At the beginning of 2019, Amazon began to publish several maps of Middle-earth on Twitter, which showed the world at different points in its history, in order to finally announce the plot of the series in the second era of the fictional calendar of Middle-earth with the last map. These cards were designed and created by the former Oxford professor, companion of Tolkien and Tolkien scientist Thomas Alan Shippey and Tolkien illustrator and concept designer of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy John Howe . Howe will work on the series as an illustrator and concept artist . Shippey later explained that although Amazon had relatively free room for maneuver due to the rather limited information about the age, one had to adhere to the specifications of the Tolkien Estate in terms of content and structure . So you can introduce new characters and events, but you shouldn't contradict the official canon. At the same time, there could hardly be any references to the first era, as the Tolkien Estate did not want to sell the rights for this. Nothing is known about contracts with Middle-earth Enterprises , which hold the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit . In April 2020, it was reported that Shippey had left the project.

Filming and casting

It was originally announced that filming would not take place in New Zealand , as in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies , but in Scotland and Ireland . Starting in August 2019, they wanted to shoot in a film studio in Leith , a district of the Scottish capital Edinburgh , for about three months , with other locations such as Portree , Dunskey Castle and Portpatrick being shortlisted. From March 2020 they wanted to film for another three months in the capital of Scotland. Due to the simultaneous production of the Avatar sequels and the limited studio space, it was initially said that only a few outdoor and nature recordings should be made in New Zealand. However, it was later reported that the production team had changed their mind and had now chosen New Zealand as the main location. Production companies from the major cities of Auckland and Queenstown , around which the series is to be created, have been pre-production for over a year. Scotland, on the other hand, is no longer an option due to the upcoming Brexit . According to Thomas Alan Shippey, scenes will be filmed one after the other at a location, so the series will not be produced chronologically. A prerequisite for this, however, is that the entire first season, which should consist of eight episodes, must be completely planned and written. The headquarters of production will be in Auckland, where the studio recordings will also be made, while the area around Queenstown will be used for outdoor recordings. The first test recordings should already have been made in the first half of 2019, while filming did not begin until the end of February 2020. On March 16, 2020, the filming with around 800 people involved was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

The first two episodes will be directed by Juan Antonio Bayona , who will also be executive producer on the series. Bayone said about his commitment that as a "lifelong fan" it was an honor for him to be part of this project and to be able to lead the audience to Middle-earth. At the same time, he confirmed again that the series will play in the second age. Other executive producers will be Belén Atienza , Bruce Richmond , Gene Kelly , Sharon Tal Yguado and Lindsey Weber . Helen Shang and Ron Ames are co-producers . Kate Hawley , who worked as a costume designer on the Hobbit trilogy, will be responsible for the costume design . The Design is by Oscar winner Rick Heinrichs and the special effects of Jason Smith are conducted. As the first actress Markella Kavenagh was engaged in a role called Tyra . In September 2019, it was reported that Will Poulter would be one of the leading roles in the series. In December 2019 he had to leave the series due to scheduling problems, whereupon he was replaced by Robert Aramayo . In October 2019, starting with two local agencies, an actor casting for “background extras and extras with bigger roles” began in New Zealand, whereby actors with “interesting faces and physique” were sought. Shortly afterwards, the commitment of Max Baldry in an "important role" became known. At almost the same time, the main antagonist, Oren , was cast with Joseph Mawle . In December 2019, Ema Horvath was finally cast for a leading role; in the same month the young Elf Galadriel was cast with Morfydd Clark . In January 2020, Charlie Vickers, Daniel Weyman, Dylan Smith , Ismael Cruz Cordova, Megan Richards, Nazanin Boniadi , Owain Arthur, Sophia Nomvete, Tom Budge and Tyroe Muhafidin were confirmed for the first season.
