The Theater der Keller is a private theater in Cologne-Deutz . It is in cooperation with the drama school der Keller .

history

The theater was founded in 1955 by the actor couple Marianne Jentgens and Heinz Opfinger, who were also its first directors. Jentgens ran the theater together with her husband until 1970, and alone from 1970 until her death in 1974. The theater's first venue was a former air raid shelter in Cologne-Lindenthal . Hence the name "the cellar" comes from.

The theater opened on October 11, 1955 with a performance by Jean-Paul Sartre's Closed Society . In 1954 the theater moved to the north of Cologne. From 1974 it was located in a former maternity hospital in the southern part of Cologne.

present

Since the 2013/14 season the theater has been managed by the artistic director Heinz Simon Keller . The program is characterized by contemporary plays, including many world premieres and German premieres. The pieces deal with current topics from politics and society, often with a local reference. Discussions with the audience take place on a regular basis after the performances. There is a close cooperation with the drama school in the basement. Once per season, a final project by graduates of the school is shown in the Theater der Keller.

In June 2017, the private theater was placed on the red list by the German Cultural Council, the pre-warning list and classified in category 3. In September 2019 the theater moved into the factory hall of the TanzFaktur in Cologne-Deutz.
