Thomas Kessler (born January 20, 1986 in Cologne - Holweide ) is a German football player . The goalkeeper was most recently under contract with 1. FC Köln and is a former young German national player.
Career
Kessler, who has Polish roots, moved from Grün-Weiß Brauweiler to 1. FC Köln in 2000 , where he played in the youth teams and since 2004 has played a total of 19 games in the regional and major leagues for the second team.
From the beginning of 2007 he was a member of the Cologne team. On May 13, 2007, he represented Stefan Wessels , who had failed due to a broken rib, in the second division game against Kickers Offenbach , making his debut in professional football. In the following final game of the season at 1. FC Kaiserslautern , Kessler guarded the FC goal. His contract period was extended to June 30, 2013, as he was considered a potential successor to the goalkeeper Faryd Mondragón .
On July 1, 2010, Kessler was loaned to FC St. Pauli for two years . When the relegation of FC St. Pauli became apparent, he used a contract option that allowed him to withdraw from the contract after a year. He was then awarded to the Bundesliga relegated Eintracht Frankfurt for the 2011/12 season , but after a few matchdays he was ousted as a regular goalkeeper by Oka Nikolov .
After the Frankfurt team had been promoted to the 1st Bundesliga , Kessler returned to 1. FC Köln, who had been relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga , but whose sporting management had decided on the young Timo Horn as the regular goalkeeper well before the start of the 2012/13 season . Horn was injured during the 2016/17 Bundesliga season . Kessler was 13 games in a row in the goal of Cologne and was team captain in one of the games . His contract ran until June 2020. Kessler has the option of entering into another employment relationship with 1. FC Köln after his active career.
