biography

Tim moved to Almada with his parents at an early age , where he developed an interest in music at a young age. He was given a guitar and played it extensively. When he was around 15, he discovered the bass for himself, based on its rhythmic importance and driving force in the music Tim prefers, from Brazilian music to punk.

In 1978 the punk band Xutos & Pontapés formed in Lisbon , on the opposite side of the river Tejo from Almada . At the invitation of their designated singer Zé Leonel, Tim became a founding member of the band and took over the bass game. In 1981 Zé Leonel got out and founded the folk-punk band Ex-Votos. Tim took over the vocals and is still the singer and most important songwriter of the Xutos, which became the most successful Portuguese rock band of all time. In 1989 Tim founded his own label El Tatu ; the first release (the debut album of the punk band Censurados ) was followed by numerous other albums by young bands.

Solo career

In the early 1990s, the Xutos' activities were temporarily reduced, and Tim was invited to take part in solo projects outside of his band. He was part of Resistência ("Resistance"), a Portuguese supergroup that performed acoustic versions of their own pop hits, and achieved double platinum sales in 1991 with their debut album . During this time, other Xutos members also took part in projects outside of their band, and occasionally their paths crossed (e.g. in 1991 in the Palma's Gang project by Jorge Palma ). No conflicts within the band in this connection are known, and the successful further development of the Xutos was not impaired. In the following years Tim also took part in other projects solo (e.g. 1995 Rio Grande ).

In 1999 he released his first solo album. He recorded Olhos Meus ("My Eyes") with musicians from the punk bands Peste & Sida and Censurados, and in his self-written songs he pursued an intimate language similar to that of the Xutos. Musically, the songs were a bit quieter, characterized by slight influences from blues rock and Portuguese songwriters , and a more acoustic, less distorted sound.

With his next solo albums, the range of influences increased, with the more acoustic, more focused on the song orientation in contrast to the Xutos. As guests on his second album Um eo Outro ("The one and the other") u. a. Mariza and Mário Laginha to hear. For his third album Braço de Prata ("Silberarm", the name of a Lisbon district on the Tejo, where the studio used is located) he invited musicians from very differently oriented bands, including a. by Madredeus , Buraka Som Sistema and the backing band by Sérgio Godinho . They reinterpreted songs by Adriano Correia de Oliveira , Sétima Legião , the Xutos & Pontapés and others, giving them a quieter, more introverted and reduced atmosphere. In 2010 Tim released his fourth solo album Companheiros de Aventura ("Adventure Companions"), which was published as a CD with a book in an exclusive edition by the Fnac store chain . On the 13 songs he invited 4 well-known Portuguese musicians to duets: the singer and guitarist Rui Veloso , the songwriter Vitorino , the pianist Mário Laginha, and the fado singer Celeste Rodrigues .

reception

The popular singer makes more soulful, reduced music with his solo project than with his band Xutos & Pontapés. Here he puts the song, its melody and its text more in the foreground, and moves the instrumentation a bit into the background. The focus is more on poetic texts, without foregoing critical lines and a clear stance. Tempo and pitches are better matched to his simple but expressive voice than in the distorted rock of the Xutos. The design, but also the marketing of the albums are not focused on high sales figures. Compared to the Xutos albums, Tim's solo project is commercially insignificant. His third album, released in 2008 in cooperation with El Tatu and the public television broadcaster RTP , reached number 30 in the charts. Even the more publicized album from 2010 only reached 7th place for a short time and fell completely off the charts after 5 weeks. Rather, he lives a quieter, more creative side here, and also gives new audiences access to well-respected and deserving musicians.
