Tod auf Neuwerk is a television film from the crime series Tatort by ARD and ORF . The film was produced by Norddeutscher Rundfunk under the direction of Helmut Förnbacher and first broadcast on March 24, 1996. It is the crime scene episode 328. It is the 26th case for detective chief inspector Paul Stoever ( Manfred Krug ). For his colleague Peter Brockmöller ( Charles Brauer ) it is the 23rd case in which he is investigating.

On the island of Neuwerk , the shipping director Freimut Drost is found dead in the mudflats. A case for the Hamburg criminal police, as the small island at the mouth of the Elbe is politically part of the Hamburg-Mitte district of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. In their investigations, Stoever and Brockmöller have a difficult time facing the silent and stubborn islanders. Nobody wants to have known what led Drost to Neuwerk.

While Stoever is investigating on the island, Brockmöller goes back to Hamburg and finds out there that Drost has been involved in several bribery affairs, for which he needed the money, cannot be determined at first. In the meantime, Stoever learns on Neuwerk that Drost has got into an argument with a Kai Helm over a woman, which, however, does not seem to be a sufficient reason for a murder for the inspector. Otherwise, Drost supposedly wanted to observe the bird colonies, but only nautical charts can be found in the room of his guesthouse. The only information that Stoever can also bring out of the obdurate islanders is the fact that the dead person observed the cutter "Xylia", which belongs to the Hamburg diving school owner Knoll, every day.

Brockmöller's research in Hamburg has shown that Drost was apparently looking for his friend Jonas Schomann, who disappeared without a trace on Neuwerk a year ago, whereby the "Xylia" and her crew should not have played an insignificant role. But Stoever does not believe that Drost was only interested in finding the missing person. When trying to eavesdrop on the crew of the "Xylia", Stoever literally goes swimming and is in danger of death when the tide comes in and he does not reach the coast in time. Fortunately, a small cutter found him in a lifebuoy and brought him ashore.

Stoever now suspects that Drost was looking for a wreck and that he may therefore have to die. When the "Xylia" drives out again, Stoever and Brockmöller follow with a cutter and just join them when the diving team pulls a safe full of money from the depths. Knoll is arrested and Jonas Schomann's body is found in the wreckage on the sea floor.

It turns out that the former factory owner Friedrich Schomann used his land on Neuwerk as an illegal toxic waste dump for years. Nevertheless, he went bankrupt and had sold his land to the real estate agent Bolten. Since Drost and his friend needed money again and again for their dives and the expensive equipment, Drost had obtained this from the bribes they received, while Schomann had blackmailed Bolten with his knowledge of the contaminated country. So that the garbage scandal did not become known and Bolten could continue planning his luxury apartments on the site, the blackmailer Jonas Schomann and later also Drost were silenced by Sven Bolten. Since Friedrich Schomann is slowly discovering that his son could only have been killed by Bolten, he tries to shoot him, which Stoever and Brockmöller can prevent. They arrest both Friedrich Schomann and Sven Bolten.

In their last crime scene, Death in front of Scharhörn (episode 461), Stoever and Brockmöller return to the islands of Neuwerk and Scharhörn again in 2001 .

It was first broadcast on March 24, 1996. The ARD broadcast achieved a market share of 28.70 percent with 9.48 million viewers.

criticism

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm gave the best possible rating (thumbs up) and found: “Nordic cold and pretty tricky”.
