Tom Lewis (born January 5, 1991 in Welwyn Garden City ) is an English professional golfer on the European Tour .

Life / personal

As the son of the former European Tour player and golf pro Bryan Lewis , he was baptized after his birth in Welwyn Garden City , also the hometown of golf legend Nick Faldo , after the sporting example of his father Tom Watson . He was diagnosed with dyslexia in his early youth, and then left school early at the age of 16 in order to fully prepare for a career as a professional golfer, having been trained by his father.

Career

amateur

Even as an amateur, Lewis was able to achieve several tournament victories and respectable successes. In 2009 he won the British Boys Championships , in 2010 he finished second at the New South Wales Open . He celebrated his breakthrough in 2011. After winning the St. Andrews Links Trophy , which is important for amateurs , he was able to qualify for the British Open 2011 at Royal St George's Golf Club via a qualifying tournament. In the opening round, which he contested with his namesake Tom Watson , he set a starting record for amateurs with a round of 65 strokes and was also able to maintain the shared lead in the overall standings for a time. His final shared 30th place in the tournament meant not only winning the Silver Medal but also the best placement for an amateur in 43 years. After the Walker Cup , he moved to the professional camp at the end of the 2011 season.

professional

His first tournament as a professional was the Austrian Open 2011, where he finished 10th. He didn't have to wait long for his first win as a professional, winning the Portugal Masters on his third appearance as a professional . A little later he was able to play his first WGC tournament. He made the cut and finished 76th after a failed last lap. He finished his first year in 66th place in the Race to Dubai and just barely failed to qualify for the season finale of the top 60. The year 2012 started a bit sluggishly for him, his best result so far is a 22nd place at the Volvo Golf Champions in South Africa . He then played his first tournament on the PGA Tour at the Transitions Championship but failed here on the cut.
