Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers was an American rock band formed in Gainesville , Florida in 1976 . The band was led by Tom Petty until his death in 2017 .
history
The group was founded in 1976 in Florida by Tom Petty . In addition to him, Mike Campbell , Benmont Tench , Ron Blair and Stan Lynch are among the founding members. The first four albums were recorded with this line-up, the first (named after the band) was released in 1976. The international breakthrough came in 1979 with the third album Damn the Torpedoes .
In 1982 bassist Ron Blair left the band and was replaced by Howie Epstein . Scott Thurston joined in 1991 . In the same year the band released their most successful studio album, Into the Great Wide Open, which contained the single Learning to Fly . In 1994 Stan Lynch split from the group and Steve Ferrone took his place on drums. Blair rejoined the Heartbreakers in early 2002, as Epstein was increasingly unable to perform his duties in the band due to drug problems. Epstein died on February 23, 2003 of a heroin overdose .
In 2002 Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (with Blair and Epstein in attendance) .
In 2008, the band appeared on the Super Bowl XLII halftime show . At the sold out University of Phoenix Stadium , they played their hits American Girl , I Won't Back Down , Free Fallin ' and Runnin' Down a Dream .
Tom Petty, the band's founder, died on October 2, 2017, at the age of 66, after a heart attack, just days after the Heartbreakers' major North American tour ended.
