Tom Schimmeck

Tom Schimmeck (born October 27, 1959 in Hamburg ) is a German journalist and publicist. He mainly publishes reports, radio features, portraits, commentaries and columns in newspapers, magazines and on the radio. His book Best Nothing New was published in 2010.

Life

Schimmeck grew up in Hamburg. At the beginning of his studies of German and history at the University of Hamburg he was one of the co-founders of taz and soon worked for them as editor and correspondent in Hamburg, Berlin and later in Bonn. From 1983 he also wrote for the Frankfurter Rundschau , the NDR and the magazines Konkret , Natur and Transatlantik . In 1984 he left the taz and worked as a freelance writer. In 1986 he became political editor and reporter for the newly founded magazine Tempo . At the beginning of 1987 he moved to Spiegel as a political editor .

At the end of 1989 Schimmeck left the paper and went to Johannesburg , South Africa , as a freelance writer . a. for Geo , Merian , Sports, Stern , Transatlantik, Wochenpost , the magazines of the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the Zeit , several daily newspapers and the radio reported on the time after Nelson Mandela's release , but also on the wars in neighboring countries such as Angola and Mozambique . In 1992 he moved to Vienna as a foreign reporter for the news magazine profil , for which he worked worldwide.

In 1993 the journalist returned to Hamburg to work for the newly founded weekly newspaper Die Woche as an editor, foreign reporter, portrait writer and columnist, initially in the Hamburg editorial team and later, until the newspaper was closed in 2002, as a contract author. Since then, Schimmeck has mainly worked for broadcasters such as Deutschlandfunk, NDR and MDR . The radio works he made on extensive travels include the Texas feature “On the Roadside of Democracy” (DLF 2004), the neo-Nazi feature “The March on the Middle”, the war veteran feature “The Scars of Uncle Sam” (DLF / NDR 2007) and the South Africa feature "Kalamazoo" (DLF 2010). His radio pieces about the history of the microphone ("Tonfänger", MDR 2007), rampant youth alcoholism ("Koma-Kicks", NDR 2008), poverty in Silicon Valley ("Silicon Blues - In the backyard of a myth", SWR 2015), dealing with weapons in the USA using the example of the death of the exchange student Diren D. ("Four shots in Missoula - The death of the student Diren D.", NDR / Deutschlandradio Kultur 2015) and traumatized German soldiers ("Kaputte Krieger", MDR 2018 ) have been awarded prizes. The author also writes for newspapers and magazines. In addition to politics, he deals with social issues, science and technology. His criticism of the state of the media was reflected in numerous speeches, articles and the propaganda feature "Spin" (NDR / DLF / SR 2008).

Schimmeck is a member of the Research Network and co-publisher of the online magazine MagDA.
