The 5th stage of the 2006 Tour de France stretched over 225 km on July 6th, from Beauvais to Caen . It was (after the prologue) the first stage of this year's Tour de France, which was held entirely on French territory.

Similar to the previous days, outliers again shaped the events. Samuel Dumoulin and Björn Schröder had pulled away from six other drivers at 20 km. After it seemed as if the attempt to escape would fail, Dumoulin and Schröder started another attack and were only found 3.5 km from the goal. In the meantime, their maximum lead was 12:50 min.

The end of the stage was overshadowed by a fall in the main peloton, just before the outliers caught up. Óscar Freire secured victory in the sprint of the field . For the first time on this tour, there were no changes to the wearers of the special jerseys.
