The 20th stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 26th was a 53-kilometer individual time trial and ran from Cérilly to Saint-Amand-Montrond through the departments of Allier and Cher .

The profile of the stage was largely flat with a small incline and an easy descent at the end. The last placed Bernhard Eisel opened the race. Leif Hoste achieved the first time, which lasted a little longer, before it was undercut by Sébastien Rosseler and immediately afterwards by Danny Pate . Sebastian Lang took the lead next , shortly afterwards David Millar and finally the favorite Fabian Cancellara . Stefan Schumacher undercut this time, which was not reached afterwards, and thus also won the second time trial of the 2008 Tour. Then the fight for the yellow jersey began. Cadel Evans initially tried to leave Bernhard Kohl behind in the overall standings, but he was only able to take away a few seconds at the finish. In the interim times and at the finish, Christian Vande Velde , Denis Menschow and Kim Kirchen achieved better times than Evans. He also did not manage to catch up with the strong driving Carlos Sastre and was only able to take 29 seconds away from him. As a result, Sastre was still more than a minute ahead of Evans in the overall standings at the finish, which enabled him to secure his yellow jersey. Kohl was able to defend his third place in the overall standings behind Evans. Fränk Schleck dropped from second to sixth place. The goal in St-Amand-Montrond was reached on a 470 meter long and 6.5 meter wide home straight.
