The 20th stage of the Tour de France 2009 led on July 25th over 167 km from Montélimar through the Baronnies to Mont Ventoux in the Vaucluse department in Provence (northeast of Avignon ). The mountain often brought a preliminary decision of the race in earlier tours. In 2009 it was the day's destination for the first time right before the final stage in Paris . This stage contained two intermediate sprints and five mountain classifications of the 3rd and 4th and at the finish of the Hors Catégorie .
Contador confidently defended the yellow jersey against the runners-up on the climb to the final mountain. Armstrong succeeded in consolidating 3rd place in the overall standings against repeated attacks by the Schleck brothers (especially against Fränk Schleck). Out of a 16-strong breakaway group, Manuel Garate (Rabobank) as winner of the day and Tony Martin (Team Columbia) reached the finish shortly before the field.
After reaching the finish line, the racing teams, the technical equipment and the other helpers were transferred to Paris, partly with a TGV special train (3.5 hours drive) to the last starting point in Montereau-Fault-Yonne .
