Race course
The first stage ended in a mass sprint, which the Russian Leonid Krasnow from RusVelo won ahead of his compatriot Alexander Serebrjakow ( Team Type 1-Sanofi ), while Michael Kurth ( Team Eddy Merckx-Indeland ) finished ninth as the best German. Meiyin Wang of the Hengxiang Cycling Team , who was Chinese and fourth overall last year, had already secured the lead in the mountain classification as an outlier, which he was to carry until the end of the tour.
In the final sprint of the second day, Mohammad Saufi Mat Senan ( Terengganu Cycling Team ), a rider from Malaysia prevailed. Alexander Serebryakov was second again for the day and was able to take over the yellow jersey of the overall leader of Krasnow and the lead in the points classification through the time bonus.
The third part of the day also ended with a mass sprint. Serebryakov, driving in the yellow jersey, celebrated his first stage success and extended his lead from two to twelve seconds.
The Russian succeeded in repeating this victory one day later, and again the overall runner-up Krasnov remained without a time bonus and was therefore already 22 seconds behind the Type 1 driver. The German Michael Kurth sprinted to third place on the day in Chengmai .
On the following stage, Kurth still managed to finish tenth, while the Dutchman Ramon Sinkeldam ( Team Argos-Shimano ) was able to secure his first professional victory after already three top ten placements on the previous days, with which the stagiaire won in the The overall standings, 19 seconds behind Serebryakov, who this time could not intervene in the final sprint, improved to second place. Behind Sinkeldam, the Landbouwkrediet duo Kevin Peeters and Joeri Stallaert took the other podium places.
The sixth stage was then the first section of the Tour of Hainan 2012, which was not decided in the mass sprint. Instead, the national team from Hong Kong dominated : King Lok Cheung prevailed ahead of Kazakhs Dmitri Grusdew ( Pro Team Astana ), while Ying Hong Yeung and Ki Ho Choi simultaneously finished in the following places. The German Florian Salzinger ( Atlas Personal-Jakroo ) was five seconds behind stage fifth, with Kevin Peeters ( Landbouwkrediet-Euphony ) leading the peloton across the finish line 16 seconds behind . Despite his success, Cheung missed the overall leader's yellow jersey by four seconds.
On the seventh day, the preliminary decision in the overall standings finally took place: The field splintered into many small groups and Grusdew, who was second the day before, crossed the finish line with a two-second lead over a group of four chasing teams with his team-mate and defending champion Valentin Iglinski , the Swede Tobias Ludvigsson ( Team Argos- Shimano ), the Spaniard Víctor de la Parte ( SP Tableware Cycling Team ) and Anton Samowalow ( RusVelo ). Behind him was the American Chris Butler ( Champion System Pro Cycling Team ), seven seconds behind. The remaining pursuers were all more than 45 seconds behind. The previous leader, Serebryakov, even lost almost six minutes, which meant that the drivers who were ahead in the daily standings were also able to conquer the top places in the overall standings. The Kazakh time trial champion Grusdew was allowed to slip on the yellow jersey, which he was supposed to defend until the end of the tour.
The eighth stage ended again in the sprint, and Ramon Sinkeldam was able to cheer for the second time . The Dutchman left Serebryakov and the overall second Iglinski behind and recommended himself with his successes for a professional contract with Argos-Shimano. The German Michael Kurth finished fifth.
At the end of the tour, Sanya Alexander Serebrjakow secured his third day's victory in another mass sprint, Sinkeldam had to be content with second place this time, Kurth finished tenth. Dmitri Grusdew was able to celebrate the third overall Astana victory in a row in front of team-mate Iglinski, and Ludvigsson completed the podium of the tour.
