route

The 2011 Tour of Hainan was largely flat and was therefore ideal for the sprinters. The starting point was Sanya in the south of the island. The first stage took the field northeast and then inland to Wuzhishan . On the second day, there were only 89 kilometers to be covered around Wuzhishan. Then there was a transfer to Xinglong , located south of the bank , where the third stage started the next day, which took the participants north to the city of Wenchang .

The fourth stage ran from Wenchang on the west side of the island to Haikou . After the following section to Chengmai , the longest stage of the tour was on the program, which led over 202 kilometers from Danzhou to Dongfang in the extreme southwest of the island. From there the route went south back to Sanya, where the Tour of Hainan ended with an 88-kilometer circuit (six laps) in the city.

Race course

The first stage ended in a mass sprint, in which the Frenchman Justin Jules ( La Pomme Marseille ) defeated last year's winner of the tour, Valentin Iglinskiy ( Pro Team Astana ) and slipped on the yellow jersey of the overall leader.

On the second day, the race saw a solo winner with Yasuharu Nakajima from the Aisan Racing Team , who was already beaten in the overall standings and therefore could not endanger the leader Jules, who was third in the sprint of the field behind Kenny van Hummel and thanks to the time bonuses his lead in the overall standings on Iglinskiy to five seconds.

The third part of the day was then decided again in a mass sprint, Tom Veelers ( Skil-Shimano ) was the fastest in front of his compatriot and teammate van Hummel. Jules extended his overall lead to seven seconds thanks to the bonus seconds on an intermediate sprint.

On the fourth day of the tour, three outliers were able to cross the finish line a few seconds ahead of the peloton , with Deon Locke from Champion System taking the first stage win for a Chinese team ahead of Ma Hainjun (China) and Wong Kam Po . The field was again led by Tom Veelers. The German Alex Schmitt from the Eddy Merckx-Indeland team improved to third place in the overall ranking, at the same time as Iglinskiy.

The fifth stage saw a one-two victory for the Terengganu Cycling Team from Malaysia in a mass sprint : Anuar Manan won ahead of Mohamed Harrif Salleh . Kenny van Hummel took over the jersey of the best in points, which he should also wear at the end of the tour.

It was also Van Hummel who one day later ensured Skil-Shimano's second success in the 2011 Tour of Hainan in the sprint . Peter Erdin from Switzerland from Atlas Personal was third behind Salleh for the day, while Valentin Iglinskiy was able to reduce his gap to Jules to six seconds in the overall standings.

The seventh stage also went to van Hummel in a mass sprint, Justin Jules defended his yellow jersey once again as fourth of the day.

But on the penultimate part of the day that followed, the Frenchman was left behind and lost almost 25 minutes on top. Defending champion Valentin Iglinskiy won the stage in the sprint of the field and slipped into the yellow jersey. Thanks to his third place on the day, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg from MTN Qhubeka was able to move up to second place in the overall ranking, ahead of the German Alex Schmitt, thanks to the associated time bonus.

At the end of the tour, Kenny van Hummel again won the mass sprint in his last race for Skil-Shimano, he switched to Vacansoleil-DCM for the 2012 season . At the same time, he also won the Iglinskiy jersey back. Justin Jules was third again of the day, but last year's winner Valentin Iglinskiy from Kazakhstan secured the overall victory . The second-best German in the overall standings behind third-placed Alex Schmitt was his team-mate Matthias Bertling in sixth.
