Stages and course of the race

The first three sections of the day passed without major topographical difficulties near the Gulf of Oman . The mass sprint of the first stage was won by the German André Greipel ( Lotto Belisol Team ), while Peter Sagan ( Liquigas-Cannondale ) won the second stage, taking on the red jersey of the overall leader. On the third stage there was a German double victory, Marcel Kittel ( Project 1t4i ) won another mass sprint ahead of André Greipel, who was also able to take over the overall lead from Peter Sagan with his second place. The slightly hilly fourth stage was again won by André Greipel, who was able to successfully defend his red jersey.

The preliminary decision about overall victory was made on the fifth stage, which, like last year, led inland up to the "Green Mountain", which was 5.8 kilometers long and an average of 10.3% steep. The Italian Vincenzo Nibali ( Liquigas-Cannondale ) won at the same time ahead of the Slovak Peter Velits ( Omega Pharma-Quick Step ), who took the lead in the overall standings with a one-second lead over Nibali with his second place. All of Nibali's attacks on the flat final stage, on which Marcel Kittel celebrated his second day's victory, were unsuccessful, which is why Peter Velits was able to win the tour with a wafer-thin margin.
