Trevor Mbakwe (born January 24, 1989 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is an American - Nigerian basketball player . After studying in his native country, Mbakwe became a professional player in Europe. After a season in Italy, Mbakwe played in the basketball Bundesliga 2014/15 for the German first division club Brose Baskets.

Career

After finishing school, Mbakwe got a place in the neighboring state of Wisconsin in 2007 at Marquette University in Milwaukee , where he played for the college team Golden Eagles in the then Big East Conference of the NCAA . Here he only had a few missions due to knee problems and after a change of coach he finished his studies there and went first to the Miami-Dade College in Hialeah , where he played successfully for the Sharks in the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA). In 2009 he returned to his hometown and was also enrolled at the University of Minnesota , but without having a license to play for the NCAA. After all, from 2010 he also became active for the University's Golden Gophers in the Big Ten Conference , in which he twice averaged the most rebounds per game in 2011 and 2013 . After a cruciate ligament rupture , Mbakwe had to suspend the 2011/12 season after seven appearances as redshirted . After the Gophers had reached the final of the National Invitation Tournament 2012 without Mbakwe , they qualified for the national NCAA finals tournament in 2013 , in which the Gophers survived the opening round for the first time since the scandalous 1990s. In the second game, however, they lost to the favored Gators of the University of Florida .

After Mbakwe was not selected in the NBA Draft 2013 by any club in the highest endowed professional league NBA , he could not recommend himself to the NBA Summer League for a contract. Finally Mbakwe signed a contract with the Italian runner-up Virtus Acea from the Italian capital Rome . In the Eurocup 2013/14 , however, the team failed in the preliminary round, among others, to the German teams Alba Berlin and Telekom Baskets Bonn . Also in the Italian championship you came only sixth in the play-offs for the title, but in the first round you could defeat the third Pallacanestro Cantù in three games. In the semifinal series, however, they were eliminated after only one win in five games against the previous series champion Montepaschi Siena . Mbakwe got a contract with the German first division club Brose Baskets from Bamberg for the 2014/15 basketball Bundesliga .
