Station of the Trollinger marathon on Mönchsbergsee between Dürrenzimmern and Neipperg

The Trollinger Marathon is a marathon and half marathon in Heilbronn , which is organized by the Württemberg Athletics Association and hosted by Heilbronn Marketing GmbH . It has taken place in May or June since 2001 and is one of the largest landscape runs in Germany.

route

The start is in Badstrasse in Heilbronn at the level of the Böckinger Bridge. First it goes to the Götzenturmbrücke, there over the Neckar and along the right bank of the river in the district of Sontheim . Behind Flein there is an ascent to the highest point of the route, the Haigern near Talheim . Here the half-marathon route turns north, while that of the marathon continues westwards and leads via Lauffen , where the Neckar is crossed, Meimsheim , Hausen and Dürrenzimmern to Neipperg . Via Nordhausen and Nordheim it goes back to Heilbronn, where the half marathon course joins in the Klingenberg district . The finish is in the Frankenstadion Heilbronn , in the immediate vicinity of the start. A total of 340 meters in altitude must be mastered in the marathon and 150 meters in the half marathon .

scope

Each participant receives a bottle of Trollinger as a present, and just like the Ahrathon , the German Wine Road Marathon and the Médoc Marathon , wine is served at the refreshment points alongside the usual drinks for athletes.

Scientific accompanying research

As part of the runs in 2016 and 2017, scientists from Heilbronn University carried out two scientific studies with 898 (2016) and 845 (2017) Trolli runners before and after the main run. These dealt with the questions:

  • What technology do runners use for training or during a running event?
  • How exactly do devices such as smartphones , GPS sports watches, activity trackers and the like record the running route?
  • Do runners trust the data recorded by the devices?
  • Why do marathon and half marathon participants use technology?
  • Would participants share the recorded (fitness) data with third parties and, if necessary, with whom?

The results of both studies have shown that three out of four participants use a so-called wearable during training or competition. GPS sports watches are widespread, followed by smartphones and apps; Activity trackers and smartwatches , on the other hand, are rarely found in the group of ambitious runners. The group of younger men (up to 39 years of age) is particularly associated with the use of technology while running. The accuracy of the devices was evaluated in 2016: It turned out that GPS sports watches measured the running distance more precisely than smartphones with a combined running app.

According to the researchers' press release, the following findings were made in 2017 with regard to trust: "Three quarters of the device users have a high level of trust in the measurement accuracy [..]. When asked why the running enthusiasts use a tracker, the study participants had several possible answers. The most popular answer, with 54.2 percent, was individual training control. In addition, self-motivation was ticked most frequently with 20.5 percent. Pure curiosity ranks third of the main reasons with 9.5 percent. ”The willingness to share recorded fitness data seemed quite conceivable for the respondents:“ More than half would share their fitness data with family and friends, but only one Third with doctors. However, only 12 percent would be willing to include their health insurance. "
