Tschernske is located in Upper Lusatia in the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape Biosphere Reserve . Surrounding villages are of the community Rietschen belonging district Neuliebel in the northeast, which the city Niesky belonging district Kosel in the east of the municipality Mücka belonging district Peter Hain in the southeast, Kreba in the south of the municipality Boxberg / OL belonging district Dürrbach the east and Reichwalde in the north-west.

Tschernske was first mentioned in 1423 as Czirnski . In the period that followed, the place name changed frequently. In 1490 the place was recorded as Tschyrrnosc . In 1527 the place name was Czerniessky and in 1607 Tczschernicko . After that, the place name of changed Tschernsko (1632) on Tzschernsko (1759) to Zernßke / Zschernicke in 1792. 1936 Tschernske was in the course of Germanization at the time of National Socialism in deer forest renamed, this designation in 1947 reversed. In 1777 there were ten possessed men , three gardeners and twelve cottagers as residents of Holscha . In 1825 the place had 181 inhabitants, this population rose to 229 inhabitants by 1871. After that, the population dropped to 208 in 1925.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 215 inhabitants in the 1880s, of which 207 were Sorbs (95%) and eight were Germans.
