Turan ( Russian Туран ) is a small town in the autonomous republic of Tuva (southern Siberia, Russia ) with 4981 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the Turan-Ujuk Depression on the southern flank of the Western Sayan , about 70 km northwest of the republic capital Kyzyl , on the Turan River , a left tributary of the Ujuk, which in turn flows into the Great Yenisei ( Bi-Chem ) . In the immediate vicinity is the Arzhan plateau, which is historically significant because of the Scythian spa tombs . The climate is highly continental .

The city of Turan is the administrative center of the Koschuun ( Rajons ) Pi-Chem .

It is located on the M54 Krasnoyarsk - Abakan - Kyzyl - Ersin / Mongolian border, the former US tract , and has a small airport.

history

Turan was founded in 1885 as one of the first foundations of Russian resettlers in this area that was not yet part of the Russian Empire . The place name is derived from a Turkish word for salt plains , which are locally widespread in the area.

In 1945, after Tuwas annexed to the Soviet Union , the place received city rights.

Culture and sights

Since 1981 Turan has had a small local history museum, mainly dedicated to the Russian settlement of the region.

In the district of Turan near the village of Arshan there is a complex of Scythian burial mounds from the 7th century BC. BC worth mentioning, the so-called Tuvinian Valley of the Kings .

The Russian Orthodox Church of St. Innokenti of Irkutsk had existed in Turan since 1914 , which was destroyed during the Soviet era and restored in the 1990s.

economy

The economy is characterized by small businesses in the food and wood processing industries. In the area there is agriculture with grain cultivation and sheep breeding.
