The Tustumena is an American ferry that operates as one of two ocean-going ferries on the Alaska Marine Highway .

history

The ferry was built under construction number 418 at the Christy Corporation shipyard in Sturgeon Bay . Completion took place in June 1964. The construction costs amounted to around 3 million US dollars . The ship was designed by Phillip F. Spaulding and Associates in Seattle .

In 1969, the ship was lengthened by around 17 meters and modernized for around 2.2 million US dollars at the Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel shipyard in San Francisco . The ferry was modernized again in 1991. The replacement of the ferry is planned for the beginning of the 2020s.

The ship, named after the Tustumena Glacier on the Kenai Peninsula , operates mainly between Kodiak , Seldovia , Port Lions and Homer in south-central Alaska and the Aleutian Islands . It only deviates from this route when it serves the Aleutian chain with the ports of Akutan , Chignik , Cold Bay , False Pass , King Cove , Sand Point and Unalaska / Dutch Harbor eight times a year during the summer .

Technical specifications

The ship is powered by two twelve-cylinder - diesel engines of the manufacturer General Motors , each with 1,902  kW power driven. The motors act on two propellers via reduction gears . The ship was equipped with a bow thruster during the renovation in 1969 . Two diesel generators, each with an output of 450 kW, are available for power generation on board.

Loading and unloading device

The ship has two vehicle decks. Loading and unloading takes place via two side ports in the rear of the ship. The ship also has an elevator system. Vehicles enter or leave the ship transversely to its longitudinal axis and are rotated on the vehicle deck using a turntable in order to be able to drive on the deck. The ferry can thus be loaded and unloaded independently of the onshore ro-ro systems. It can transport 34 cars on around 207  lane meters . The usable height of the vehicle deck is around 4.1 meters.

Above the vehicle decks there are three further decks with, among other things, passenger cabins, lounges with seating, a restaurant and a TV room. The sun deck is partially covered and thus protected from wind and weather.

The passenger capacity is 160 people. The ship is equipped with 24 passenger cabins, six four-bed and 18 two-bed cabins. A total of 60 beds are available. You can camp on the sun deck.

The ship is equipped with a fin stabilizer .
