The USS Chicago (SSN-721) is a nuclear-powered submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles-class submarine to.
history
The Chicago was launched on October 27, 1986 at Newport News Shipbuilding and named after the city of Chicago by Mrs. Vicki Ann Paisley . Almost two years later the boat was put into service, its first in command was Commander Robert Avery.
In 1990 the Chicago took part in Operation Desert Storm . In early 1996, one was Predator - drone from the submarine controlled. The drone reached a height of 6000 meters and moved up to 185 kilometers from the submarine, which was at a depth of approx. 60 feet (periscope depth).
In the summer of 2005, a new periscope system, the so-called virtual periscope, was tested on board the Chicago . A camera attached to the tower films the water surface and a processor on board the submarine calculates the location of objects on the water surface from the incident light. However, the resolution was not sufficient to identify a ship type. The system can make out a 30 meter object from a depth of 30 to 60 meters at a distance of one nautical mile (around 1.85 kilometers).
In 2007 Chicago took part in Exercise Malibor . In addition to two American aircraft carriers and two Arleigh Burke destroyers, Indian, Japanese, Australian and Singaporean naval forces were also involved in the Gulf of Bengal . In early 2009, the submarine moved to the Pacific for six months.
USS Chicago in fiction
In Tom Clancy's novel Im Sturm , the Chicago plays an important role in defending against a Russian offensive against Europe. The submarine also makes a small appearance in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 .
