action

Daniel Klemm has been working as an undercover agent for the protection of the constitution in Brandenburg for five years. After a failed and controversial mission in the neo-Nazi scene in Reinhardtsdorf-Schöna, Saxony, in which two skinheads are killed and Daniel is injured with a shot in the stomach, he actually wants to get out, but is initially only on leave for 3 months. In addition, he is provided with a shabby apartment in Baderstrasse in Berlin-Neukölln (Zone R4). At first he closes himself off from his new environment and is teeming with z. E.g. his neighbor, the Afghan Dina, who brings him biscuits as a welcome greeting. While trying to buy a television set in his new district, he met the second-hand electronics store owners Abbas and Jamal, who gradually accepted him into their community ( Ummah , Arabic community, also: community of Muslims) through their willingness to help . Daniel has some problems in being accepted by everyone in the community. B. brings a bottle of champagne as a gift to an Arab wedding and, among other things, Jamal is at times a thorn in the side due to his neo-Nazi tattoo on the neck (black sun). However, he can gain respect in the community through a spray campaign on a billboard, where an underwear advertisement against a kindergarten with a burqa is defused. A love affair with Dina suggests itself.

Daniel's boss at the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Mr. Hartmann, comes up to him at some point and asks him to look for evidence against his new friends so that they can be convicted as potential terrorists. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution had previously fallen out of favor due to a corruption scandal and therefore needs a sense of achievement, which is to be brought about by the arrest of Abbas and Co. Otherwise Daniel should be exchanged. He refuses to do this and after he is threatened with arrest and his friends have been arrested, he goes public with his information about the internal matters of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. He is arrested during the television interview. Abbas then waits in vain for his friend to return.

The film ends with a scene in which Daniel, Abbas and Jamal can be seen playing boules in the park, while an off-screen message announces Daniel's death in a car accident.

criticism

“The drama 'Ummah - Among Friends' takes place in Neukölln and with prejudice against Muslims. That works splendidly in scenes. Sometimes the film does not expect us enough. "

- Parvin Sadigh : The time

“With his feature film debut 'Ummah - among friends', the German-Turkish Cüneyt Kaya deliberately creates a counter-image to common prejudices. The film, which is set in Berlin's problematic Neukölln neighborhood, can be understood as an invitation to the Muslim community. "

- Anke Sterneborg : Süddeutsche Zeitung

“A drama with a didactic undertone that alternates between a sympathetic portrayal of the milieu and the cocky 'robber pistol'. The film is extraordinary not only in terms of the production, but also in terms of performance. "
