history

In Untergailnau there was originally a castle that belonged to King Ludwig IV . This handed it over to Heinrich the master chef , who in turn handed it over to the Lords of Hohenlohe . In 1373 Gailnau was raised to the status of a town that was entitled to hold a weekly market. How long Gailnau held this town charter is unclear. In 1406 Johannes von Hohenlohe , who had also donated the parish of St. Alban in the town, sold the town to the imperial city of Rothenburg. In 1408 the castle was torn down on imperial orders. This was preceded by a dispute between Burgrave Friedrich von Nürnberg and the imperial city of Rothenburg.

15 houses burned down during the Thirty Years War . Under the leadership of the French general Ezéchiel de Mélac , French murder torches are said to have set fire to 16 houses in November 1688, causing damage of at least 3,599 guilders.

At the beginning of the 18th century, all households were subject to Rothenburg.

With the Gemeindeedikt (early 19th century). Untergailnau was the tax district and the Rural Municipality Gailnau assigned. In the course of the territorial reform , this was incorporated into Wettringen on May 1, 1978.

Until the 1950s, the place had a stop on the Steinach railway line near Rothenburg-Dombühl .
