Ursus - Avengers of the Slaves (Original title: Ursus ) is an Italian-Spanish mythological adventure film , the first with the strong Roman slave Ursus in the title, directed by Carlo Campogalliani in 1960. It was premiered in German-speaking countries on September 15, 1961.

action

Returning from a battle, Ursus discovers at home that his fiancée Attea was kidnapped three years ago. A blind slave, Doreide, accuses his childhood friend, Setas, who has meanwhile risen to become a powerful and rich man, to be behind the kidnapping. Ursus takes Doreide with him and begins his search with his comrade in arms, Kleontes, who is killed in the process. After being taken by surprise in the house of Kimos, Ursus is tormented by Setas, but can use his strength to free himself.

After an adventure in a gypsy accommodation, Ursus can cross the desert with Doreide and the now captured Setas on their way to the realm of the goddess Zaas. Finally they reach the island where a queen and the priests of the cruel goddess rule; Doride is to be sacrificed to her, Ursus to be spared. After it turns out that the queen is none other than the power-hungry Attea, he has to fight a sacred bull in the arena next to Doreide.

Ursus can kill the bull; Doreide gets her eyesight back. The reign of the queen is over: the people rise up against her and the priests.

criticism

There was little enthusiasm among the critics: “A horror fairy tale, surrounded by exaggerated pathos” ( Lexicon of the international film ), also that the main actor, unlike Steve “Hercules” Reeves, is at least “able to change facial expressions, can the film not save ” (dictionary of fantasy films); “A nonsensical script, extravagant equipment, and, like in a drug intoxication, sudden events. The direction of the veteran Campogalliani is only banal and without style; Despite the occasional soft tones and good ideas, it feels like a walk in a petrified forest, ” wrote Bertrand Tavernier .
