action

The industrialist Bernard Bleu lives in England and has just carried his wife of many years, Lady Margareth, to her grave. Shortly after the funeral, he found letters from France in her private files. They come from the girl Chloé and are addressed to him as her unknown father. He realizes that he must once have fathered a daughter with his summer love, Barbara, whose existence his wife kept from him. The stiff, neurosis-plagued man hastily leaves for France. In Chloé's home town at the time, Bernard happened to meet the unemployed drinker Gustave, who raised Chloé as a father. Although he was surprised that his then wife Barbara gave birth to a child after 7.5 months, he never became suspicious. Bernard does not tell him that he is Chloé's biological father, especially since Gustave thinks he is interested in his old car. Bernard learns from Gustave that Chloé is now 24 years old, lives in Bordeaux and has long had nothing to do with her father. Barbara, on the other hand, died of cancer a few years ago.

Bernard asks Gustave Chloé's address and offers to give her a message, since he has to go to Bordeaux for work anyway. In the end, both drive to Bordeaux together. On site it turns out that Chloé will soon marry former tennis professional Stephen. Gustave did not notify her, but instead organized a casting to be able to present Stephen at the wedding with the father she had been telling him about for several years: a consul who works in Mongolia . Bernard unconsciously gets into the job interview and shortly afterwards learns with Gustave what Chloé is up to from the father replacement he has taken. Without further ado, Bernard and Gustave hit the man in their car. Gustave finally urges Bernard to come to the wedding preparation as a surrogate father. Chloé is surprised to have to introduce Bernard, who had actually been rejected, as her father, and is otherwise not satisfied with his acting skills: Bernard does not tolerate alcohol and therefore occasionally faints. He is also neurotic and cannot cross lines, which could be a serious problem when the bride enters the church with the tiled floor.

While Bernard tries to live up to his role as a father, the trained chef Gustave sneaks into the kitchen of Chloé's villa. He gradually takes over the position of head chef and modifies the menu, which now includes old favorites from Chloé's mother. She realizes that he has to be in the villa and throws him out. She has seen him drunk too often and has therefore broken off contact. Now she wants to avoid him ruining the most important day of her life. Stephen, who is enthusiastic about the dishes, prevents Gustave, whose true identity he does not know, from leaving. Because the trial run of the wedding fails due to Bernard's fear of lines, he secretly rehearses with Gustave in the church. On the way back he realizes how sad it is for Gustave not to be able to lead his daughter to the altar. The next morning he explains to Chloé that he will not take on the role of father. Gustave should rather go in his place. Meanwhile, he finds Chloé's letters to Bernard and leaves. Bernard manages to find Gustave and bring him back to the villa. Chloé confesses to Stephen that Gustave is her father and he's leaving. Chloé later finds the letters and now knows that both men are their fathers. When Bernard and Gustave return to the villa, they learn that Stephen has left. While the guests gather in the church, Bernard and Gustave look for Stephen. They find him on a tennis court and finally convince him to forgive Chloé and come to the wedding. The three men arrive when Chloé is about to cancel the wedding. After a slightly chaotic marriage, the wedding party returns to the villa. When the photo of the bride and her father was to be taken, Chloé finally made a decision: Both men can be included in the picture.

criticism

The film service found that the “elegantly staged tabloid comedy carried by a playful ensemble [...] cleverly maintains the balance between humor and feeling, while it interspersed unobtrusively serious tones in the fast-paced play.” Cinema, on the other hand, wrote that the two male main actors "through an incredibly trivial act [squealing]", and summarized: "Two fathers of clothes experience a humorous catastrophe".
