Victor "Vic" Heyliger (born September 26, 1919 in Boston , Massachusetts , † October 4, 2006 in Colorado Springs , Colorado ) was an American ice hockey player (center) and coach and a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .
Career
After three seasons at the University of Michigan in the National Collegiate Athletic Association , Heyliger completed his first professional season with the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League in the 1937/38 season , with the American in seven NHL games without point and penalty stayed. In the same season he was also on the ice for the St. Paul Saints in the Amateur Hockey Association . The striker spent the following season with the Detroit Holzbaugh Ford in the Michigan-Ontario Hockey League . Heyliger then worked as an ice hockey coach and was in charge of the ice hockey team of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign until 1943 as head coach .
In October 1943, the assailant returned to the Chicago Black Hawks as a free agent for the 1943–44 season. In total, the center forward played 26 NHL games for the Hawks, with two hits and three assists. During this time, Heyliger mostly acted alongside Fido Purpur and Johnny Gottselig . The following season, the center ended his active career for good and took on a long-term commitment as the head coach of the University of Michigan in the NCAA.
In 1961, the American was appointed as the successor to Karl Wild as the national coach of the German national team, which he supervised until the 1963 World Cup . Here, the qualification for the Olympic Winter Games 1964 succeeded by a seventh place in the A group. As the head coach of the US national team , Heyliger was also on the gang at the 1966 World Cup . The American was later responsible for the ice hockey team of the United States Air Force Academy in the NCAA in the same capacity .
1974 Heyliger was honored with the induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .
