Victor Ludwig Eduard Wilhelm Freiherr von Richthofen (born January 5, 1839 in Cammerau , Schweidnitz district , † August 19, 1909 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Victor was a son of the manor owner Eduard von Richthofen (1801–1863) and his wife Amalie, née von Schmettau (1809–1843). His older brother Bernhard (1836–1895) became district administrator and police chief of Berlin.

Military career

After his upbringing in his parents' house and in the cadet houses in Wahlstatt and Berlin , Richthofen was transferred to the 8th Infantry Regiment (called Leib-Infanterie-Regiment) of the Prussian Army on May 2, 1857 as portepeefähnrich . By mid-April 1864, he was promoted to prime lieutenant . During the war against Denmark , Richthofen took part in the siege and storming of the Düppeler Schanzen in the same year and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class with swords , for his behavior . From October 1, 1865, he was sent to the War Academy for three years for further training . This command was interrupted the following year due to participation in the war against Austria . Richthofen was used in the battles near Gitschin and Königgrätz .

After the beginning of the war against France , he first took part in the fighting at Spichern and was slightly wounded at Mars-la-Tour . During the siege of Metz on September 2, 1870 and promoted to captain, he was appointed chief of the 10th Company. Richthofen led his unit in the further course of the war in the battles at Beaune-la-Rolande , Orléans and Le Mans . Awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class, he advanced to major after the Peace of Frankfurt in mid-May 1880 and in January 1882 became a regular staff officer . This was followed from December 1883 to the end of August 1887 as commander of the 1st battalion. Then Richthofen was transferred to the Kaiser Franz Garde Grenadier Regiment No. 2 as a lieutenant colonel and regular staff officer . With the promotion to colonel on March 24, 1890, he received command of the infantry regiment "Count Tauentzien von Wittenberg" (3rd Brandenburg) No. 20 stationed in Wittenberg and commanded the 22nd infantry as major general from March 25, 1893 Brigade in Wroclaw . With the award of the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with swords on the ring, he was put up for disposal on May 14, 1894 with the statutory pension in approval of his resignation request . After his departure, Richthofen received the character of Lieutenant General on March 22, 1897 .
