Viktor Ernst (born February 18, 1871 in Marbach am Neckar , † October 30, 1933 in Stuttgart ) was a German historian . His contributions to the history of Württemberg are considered significant.

Life

Ernst was born the son of a master tanner . He attended the Latin school in Marbach am Neckar and the Evangelical seminars in Maulbronn and Blaubeuren . From 1889 to 1894 he studied Protestant theology at the Tübinger Stift ; He attended historical exercises with Dietrich Schäfer . In 1894 he passed the first theological service examination. In 1894/95 he studied church history with Friedrich Loofs at the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg . In 1895 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD.

Afterwards he was responsible for the organization of the archives of the imperial city, hospital and church maintenance in Biberach an der Riss . In 1899 the habilitation for middle and modern history and the private lectureship at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen followed . From 1903 to 1933 he was a full member with the position of collegial assessor and the title of professor at the State Statistical Office in Stuttgart . From 1909 to 1933 he was editor and editor of the Württemberg Oberamtsbeschreibung (five newly edited Oberamt descriptions: Urach 1909, Münsingen 1912, Tettnang 1915, Riedlingen 1923 and Leonberg 1930; his main collaborator was Karl Löffler ). In addition, Ernst was a managing member of the Württemberg Commission for State History from 1921 to 1931. In 1933 the Oberregierungsrat retired for health reasons and died a little later.

According to Meinrad Schaab , he brought the senior office descriptions to the "highest scientific level and achieved exemplary results in the entire German-speaking area by combining regional studies from various subjects". In a review of the Oberamtsbeschreibung Riedlingen, Robert Gradmann admired Ernst's work in relation to the revision of the source material, the diversity of the problems examined and the significance of the results. In addition to his recognized national historical work, he also made a contribution to researching the legal and economic history of the Middle Ages, as Walther Kienast and Theodor Knapp found. Karl Weller praised the work The Origin of German Real Estate for the accuracy, structure and reliability of the work; Ernst's conclusions are "imperative". Even if Karl August Eckhardt was unable to share all of the results, Ernst still had “great merit” with this work.

Ernst, a Protestant, was married and the father of two children; his son Fritz Ernst (1905–1963) was also a historian. Ernst's estate is in the Baden-Württemberg State Archives , Department of the Main State Archives Stuttgart .
