Vlčany (Slovak until 1948 "Farkašd"; Hungarian Vágfarkasd - until 1907 Farkasd ) is a municipality in western Slovakia .
location
It is located in the Danube lowlands on the bank of the Váh about 15 km south of Šaľa .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1113 as Forcas . There are two churches in the village: a Reformed church from 1785 and a Catholic one from 1807.
Until 1918 the place in Neutra County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary , then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia, but became part of Hungary again due to the First Vienna Arbitration from 1938 to 1945 . Since 1993 it has been part of today's Slovakia.
The place, inhabited by a large majority of Hungarians (2001: 73 percent of the population), had the Slovak name "Farkašd" until 1948, which was changed to the Slovak equivalent "Vlčany" ( German wolf ) because of its close linguistic proximity to the Hungarian word Farkas (German wolf ) Vlk = wolf ) renamed.
