Trnovec nad Váhom (until 1927 Slovak "Tornok"; Hungarian Tornóc ) is a municipality in Okres Šaľa in Slovakia .
location
The place is in the Danube lowlands on the bank of the Waag , on the main road I / 75 between Šaľa (5 km west) and Nové Zámky (27 km southeast). The place also has its own train station on the Bratislava – Budapest railway line .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1113 as Durmuz . Until the beginning of 1918 it belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary in Neutra County , where it was the seat of the Šaľa chair district; then he came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . Due to the First Vienna Arbitration Award , it belonged to Hungary from 1938 to 1945 .
According to the controversial census of 1910, the place was an almost purely Magyar village, 2236 of the 2458 inhabitants were Magyars. According to the 2001 census, out of 2541 inhabitants, 1900 were Slovaks and 607 were Magyars.
Former Slovakian Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan was born here in 1939.
Administratively, the municipality is divided into the districts Horný Jatov (Hungarian Felsőjattó ), Kľučiareň (Hungarian Szandner puszta ) and Nový Dvor (Hungarian Ujmajor ) in addition to the main town .
