Volker Thomas

Volker Ernst Gerhard Thomas (born November 2, 1958 in Südlohn ) is a major general in the Army of the German Armed Forces and has been in command of the German Armed Forces logistics command in Erfurt since January 14, 2016 .

Military career

Training and first uses

Volker Thomas joined the German Armed Forces in 1978 in Rheine, North Rhine-Westphalia, as a contract soldier and officer candidate with Transport Battalion 170 . Here and at the Technical Troops II School in Bremen - Grohn , he gained his first experience in the logistics of the Bundeswehr. From 1979 to 1982 Thomas completed his studies in economics and organization at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg . He graduated with a degree in business administrationfrom. His further training as an officer was from 1983 to 1987 as a supply officer in supply battalion 5 in Wetzlar and Gießen and from 1987 to 1988 with supply battalion 11 in Delmenhorst . From 1988 to 1989, Thomas returned to the Technical Troops II School in Bremen- Grohn as a lecture director .

In 1989 Thomas became company commander in the supply battalion 110 in Rheine , until he was selected in 1990 to take part in the general staff course at the command and control academy of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg . His training in Hamburg ended in 1992.

Service as a staff officer

From 1992 to 1993 Thomas was employed as a G2 staff officer in the 11th Panzer Grenadier Division in Oldenburg . From 1993 to 1995 he worked as a consultant in the Federal Ministry of Defense at the Fü H V in Bonn . His first assignment abroad was from 1996 to 1998 as Staff Officer Plans in the German share of Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe  (SHAPE) in Mons , Belgium. After this, Thomas came back to Germany and was battalion commander of Transport Battalion 11 in Dörverden from 1998 to 2000 . After his use as a commander, he was again employed in the Federal Ministry of Defense from 2003 to 2010. During this time he was a consultant in the command center of the German Armed Forces (FüZBw), staff officer 1 at the chief of staff of the command staff of the armed forces (Fü S) and head of division in the command staff of the army (Fü H II 3) in Bonn.

Service as a general

From 2010 to June 30, 2014, Thomas was the last brigade commander of Logistics Brigade 1 in Delmenhorst , which he decommissioned on April 1, 2014 with a formal appeal. This time followed from 2014 to 2015 as the commissioner of the armed forces base inspector for placement in action and the domestic repair process in the armed forces base command (Kdo SKB) in Bonn . On October 1, 2015, Thomas also took over the post of Chief of Staff on an interim basis in the Kdo SKB.

On January 14, 2016, the Inspector of the Armed Forces Base , Lieutenant General Martin Schelleis , gave him command of the Bundeswehr logistics command in Erfurt.
