The preliminary round ("intercontinental round") was held in four groups with four teams each. The top two teams in each group should qualify for the final round. However, since the hosts Spain only finished third in the group, the second in Group A did not advance. In the final round, the teams played in two groups of four. The two best teams of the two final groups reached the semifinals.
