Vollrath Lübbe

Vollrath Lübbe (born March 4, 1894 in Klein Lunow , Mecklenburg , † April 4, 1969 in Hanover ) was a German officer , most recently lieutenant general in World War II .

Life

Lübbe joined the infantry regiment "Grand Duke Friedrich II of Baden" (4th Royal Saxon) No. 103 in Bautzen on March 20, 1912, coming from the Saxon Cadet Corps as an ensign . After being assigned to the Hersfeld War School , he was promoted to lieutenant on February 24, 1914 .

Lübbe experienced the First World War as a platoon leader with his regiment on the western front . There he became a first lieutenant on August 18, 1917 . After the end of the war, return home and demobilization , he was transferred to the 23rd Reichswehr Infantry Regiment on October 1, 1919. A year later he came to the 10th (Saxon) Infantry Regiment in Dresden . He was to serve here until the end of March 1925. When he was promoted to captain on April 1, 1925, Lübbe was transferred to the 9th (Prussian) Infantry Regiment in Potsdam as chief of the mine throwing company . As a major (since May 1, 1934) Lübbe came to the Infantry School in Dresden on January 1, 1935 , where he worked as a tactics teacher until August 31, 1937. In the meantime promoted to lieutenant colonel on October 1, 1936 , he took over the 1st Battalion of the 103rd Infantry Regiment on September 1, 1937. On October 1, 1938, he was appointed commander of the 13th Cavalry Rifle Regiment of the 5th Infantry Regiment . Panzer Division .

With his association he took part in the Polish , Western and Balkan campaigns at the beginning of World War II . From 1941 Lübbe served as the commander of the 2nd Rifle Brigade in the German-Soviet War . On September 5, 1942, he was initially assigned to lead the 2nd Panzer Division , promoted to major general on October 1, and finally appointed division commander on October 20, 1942. From February 1 to April 5, 1944, Lübbe was in the Führerreserve and was then commander of the 81st Infantry Division until July 1, 1944. Due to illness, he was once more in the Führerreserve, from October 9th 1944 to the 462nd Volksgrenadier Division and from November the 49th Infantry Division to command. From the end of December Lübbe took over command of the 433rd Infantry Division . He was at the February 1945 Oder front wounded and fell at Kriescht in Soviet captivity .

His imprisonment led him to Krasnogorsk in POW camp 27 , in Cerny in POW camp 48 , as well as in Moscow Prisons No. 1 and 2 and others. It was not until 1955 that he was released from captivity and was able to return to Germany.
