action

Christiane is a German student studying geology in Moscow. Her story is told at different stages in her life. One stage is her childhood on a farm. Her main reference person here is her grandfather, who has taken her into his heart, but lives in another world and is determined to invent the perpetual motion machine. For this he gives all his strength and also the last potatoes of the family. Everything that he could contribute to the maintenance of daily life is completely alien to him. But that doesn't prevent his wife from letting him do what he wants.

At Moscow University, Christiane studies in an international mixed student group and falls in love with fellow student Hatem from Syria. We experience the students doing their practical work in the high mountains of the Caucasus as well as at the many cozy get-togethers in the student dormitory, see impressive pictures of great Islamic architecture, scenes from an Uzbek festival and a Georgian wedding and an Arab reunion. When Christiane had her child, Hatem organized a shared room in the dormitory. Although it is the great love between them, they have to make up their minds when they finish their studies. She cannot and does not want to live in a country where she cannot work in her profession; he cannot and does not want to reveal his mission to work for a better life in his home country through his knowledge and work. Both in Syria or both in the GDR - that cannot be the case for them, it always excludes full human self-realization for one of them. And there is also the tension between Christiane's self-evident claim to emancipation and Hatem's behavior, which is now shaped by oriental patriarchal traditions. In one of the last scenes, Hatem says goodbye to his daughter, whom he loves more than anything.

criticism

Günter Sobe says in the Berliner Zeitung that the strip has no artistic dimension, neither in words nor in pictures. Even the performers kick around like a mouse in a wheel. Apart from the grandfather figure, who is obsessed with inventing, nobody gets a chance to distinguish themselves, there is probably no figure at all who can be found emotionally or rationally moving.

In the Neue Zeit , HU means that the mostly brittle staging style only rarely allows great emotions.

The lexicon of international film writes that this is a thematically new film, but in terms of content and form, but insufficient and clichéd film.
