The Meyer Turku Oy , previously a site of STX Finland , is a shipbuilding undertakings incinerating or that in Finland a shipyard in Turku Perno operates.

This shipyard is one of the largest in Europe with an area of ​​144 hectares. The dry dock has a length of 365 meters. In addition to large cruise ships of the Postpanamax class, ferry ships are also built here. The company made a name for itself with the construction of the Allure of the Seas , the largest cruise ship in the world at the time.

Shipbuilding has been a tradition in Turku since the first half of the 18th century. The Crichton-Vulcan shipyard was founded in 1924 . From 1975/76 Wärtsilä relocated shipbuilding from Turku to the new shipyard in the Perno district. In 1987 there was a merger with the shipbuilding division of the formerly state-owned Valmet Group, which resulted in the Wärtsilä Marine . Two years later, the company was bankrupt. The Turku New Shipyard was founded in 1989. Initially, the focus was on completing the shipbuilding that had previously been started, but then all activities of the former Wärtsilä shipyards were taken over by Masa Yards .

In the mid-1990s, Masa Yards was bought by the Norwegian Kværner Group and renamed Kværner Masa Yards . In addition, the Finnyards were created in Rauma as early as 1991 through the merger of two shipyards , which were bought by Aker , a Norwegian concern , and renamed Aker Finnyards . In 2000, Aker succeeded in taking over competitor Kværner, and Aker Kværner was created . In 2002, a start was made to combine the shipbuilding activities of the two groups. Aker Yard ASA was established in 2004 , and on January 1, 2005, shipbuilding activities in Finland were also consolidated under one roof. Through a merger of Kvaerner Masa Yards with Aker Yards Finn , the new one was born Aker Yards Oy Finn . In June 2006 the company was renamed Aker Yards Oy .

Acquisition by STX Corporation

In 2008, the South Korean conglomerate STX Corporation took over a majority stake in Aker Yards. The Finnish branch then became STX Finland Cruise Oy .

The 19 shipyards of STX Europe now also include three Finnish shipyards, in addition to Turku, the shipyards in Helsinki and Rauma . STX Finland had around 3800 employees at the three locations. The shipyard in Helsinki built not only cruise ships and icebreakers but also large ferries. In Rauma, in addition to ferries and smaller cruise ships, multi-purpose icebreakers and other special ships are also built.

Because of the high losses suffered by the parent company, the STX Europe shipyards were sold in 2012. The Russian company OSK acquired a 50% stake in the Helsinki shipyard, now Arctech Helsinki Shipyard . At the end of 2014, STX also sold its stake to OSK. The shipyard in Rauma was closed in June 2014.

Takeover by Meyer Werft

On August 4, 2014, the German Meyer Werft confirmed the takeover of a 70% stake in the Turku shipyard. At the same time, TUI Cruises announced the order for two ships ( Mein Schiff 5 and Mein Schiff 6 ) and also secured an option to build two more cruise ships, which were converted into firm orders in July 2015. The takeover was approved by the financial institutions and the Cartel Office in September 2014. The remaining 30% remained with the Finnish state for the time being. In September Meyer Turku Oy was perfect. In April 2015, Meyer Werft also took over the remaining 30 percent from the Finnish state and is therefore 100 percent owner of Meyer Turku OY.

In April 2016, Meyer Turku ordered a 1200-ton Goliath gantry crane from Konecranes , which was erected in November 2017. The crane was delivered on June 19, 2018. The existing 600-ton gantry crane will also be modernized. A total of around 35 million euros are to be invested. In addition, the facilities of "Piikkiö Works Oy" are to be modernized for 17 million euros. It is planned to build a new assembly plant and modernize the existing one. A new steel warehouse and a new steel pretreatment plant are also to be built for a further 40 million euros.

Subsidiaries

Meyer Turku has three subsidiaries. The "Piikkiö Works Oy" is a cabin factory in Piikkiö . “Shipbuilding Completion Oy” in Turku specializes in turnkey interior fittings for public spaces on passenger ships. "ENG'nD Oy" is an engineering company in Rauma that offers shipbuilding and offshore services.

Building program

Meyer Turku's current construction program also includes cruise ships and ferries. In 2017, the high-speed ferry Megastar was delivered to the Tallink company , which can also be operated with liquid gas (LNG) for environmental reasons . The Viking Grace , which is also powered by LNG, was delivered in 2013 .
