Waarde (from Dutch value ) is a village in Zeeland and is located in the municipality of Reimerswaal . In 2017 it had 1,400 inhabitants. Until 1970 Waarde was a separate municipality.

history

Founded in the 12th century, Waarde is a village that over the centuries often had to deal with floods. Especially in the 16th and 17th centuries, the area east of Yerseke was repeatedly destroyed by floods, but made habitable again and again - in keeping with the Zeeland motto "Luctor et Emergo" ("I wrestle and get up").

Around 1187, Hendrik von Schoten , Lord of Breda , bequeathed the rights of Arnulf von Rilland to the salt marshes near Waarde to the Ten Duinen monastery . In 1219 the Schoudee brook, which separated the area of the Cistercians from Ten Duinen from that of the Lords of Valkenisse, was established as a border. The Cistercians built their grangie near Kattendijke and began to build dikes to gain land and thus make the marshland usable. Since the drainage proved difficult, embankments were created in several stages in order to gradually wrest land from the sea.

Incorporation

On January 1, 1970, the municipality Reimerswaal was redistributed and the villages of Kruiningen , Yerseke, Krabbendijke , Waarde and Rilland-Bath were incorporated. The resulting area is one of the largest in Zeeland with over 21,000 people and around one hectare per inhabitant. This also includes the waters of the Ooster and Westerschelde .

Waarde is predominantly agricultural. Many of its residents make a living from fruit growing (especially apples and pears) and run their own small farms. The area is a popular destination for cyclists, hikers and anglers.

There are two primary schools in Waarde. Most of its residents are Protestants who use the Gothic Reformed village church .
