  • The 268 qualifying matches for the 2016 European Football Championship took place between September 7, 2014 and November 17, 2015. 53 of 54 UEFA member associations played the 23 free starting places for the final round of the 2016 European Championship among themselves. Gibraltar was the youngest UEFA member to take part in the qualification for the first time. France was set as the host country and completed the field of 24 finalists.

    Qualification mode

The qualification groups were drawn on Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 12:00 CET in the Palais des Congrès in Nice . The 53 teams involved were divided into nine groups: eight groups of six teams each and one group of five teams. Each team in a group played a home and an away game against every other team in the respective group. The two best teams in each group and the third with the highest points qualified directly for the final tournament. When comparing the third group, the results of the games against the last group in the groups of six were not taken into account.

If two or more teams were tied after these games, the following criteria were used to decide:

    1. direct comparison (number of points, goal difference, goals scored, away goals scored) # 1
    2. Repetition of the direct comparison among the remaining teams # 1
    3. Results from all group matches (goal difference, goals scored, away goals scored) # 2
    4. Fair play rating
    5. UEFA coefficient for national teams
#1 Not for the comparison of third party groups
    # 2 When comparing the group third without the games against the respective group sixth

The eight remaining thirds in the group determined the remaining four finalists in playoffs with a return leg (November 12-14, 2015 and November 15-17, 2015).

In the event of a tie between two legs, the number of goals scored away first decided, in the event of a tie there was an extension. If both teams had the same number of goals and the same number of away goals after extra time, the final round participant was determined by penalty shoot-out.

    Match days

The schedule for the qualifying matches was based on the concept of the English week : a game day lasted three consecutive days. On so-called double game days (game days 2 and 3, 7 and 8, 9 and 10 as well as the play-off games) the games took place from Thursday to Tuesday. Two games were played on the double match days, so each team played either on Thursday and Sunday or on Friday and Monday or on Saturday and Tuesday. The match days were set by UEFA as follows :
