history
Reimerswaal was already important as a trading place in the Middle Ages . This was due to the favorable location on the trade route to Antwerp , and Reimerswaal was also the starting point for ships to England, France and the Baltic ports. The town had town charter since 1374.
In the years 1530 to 1570, the place and its surroundings were considerably affected by repeated storm surges . Most of the surrounding villages around the town of Reimerswaal often went under during the St. Felix flood in 1530 and the All Saints flood in 1532 . Reimerswaal was now directly on the sea. In 1632 the "old" Reimerswaal had to be given up for good. The Verdronken Land van Reimerswaal can now be found as a submerged area in the Oosterschelde .
Reimerswaal did not start to re-establish until more than 300 years later, in 1961, south of the former town. Today's Reimerswaal municipality was created in the 1970s by merging the villages of Yerseke , Vlake , Hansweert , Kruiningen , Waarde , Oostdijk , Krabbendijke , Stationsbuurt , Rilland and Bath . The main town and administrative seat of Reimerswaal is Kruiningen.
Economy and Transport
