A matter of perception is the debut album by the Austrian songwriter Felix Kramer . It was released on September 21, 2018 on the Phat Penguin Records label .

Emergence

The album was recorded in about five months of intensive studio work under the direction of producer and double bass player of the band 5 / 8erl in Ehr'n Hanibal Scheutz. Scheutz was chosen as producer because Kramer was enthusiastic about his production of the album Gut Lack by Scheutz's father Wilfried and wanted to work with him. There were no fixed times for the individual recording dates, instead Kramer usually called shortly beforehand when he wanted to record. This freedom was important to him because he had to be in an emotionally honest state for the recordings.

Most of the music was played by Kramer on guitar , harmonium and organ, as well as some experienced studio musicians . All string and wind arrangements come from Kramer himself, who had attended selected subjects in composition theory and jazz theory at the Music and Art University of the City of Vienna . Generally Kramer had his own words "with any drums - Fill and every piano - Lick , with every bass line and the mixing " relevant input and refers to himself in this regard as "hard control freak".

style

Musically, Kramer's guitar forms the basis for most of the songs, which are then often gently accompanied by string quartets or piano. The Concerto magazine called perception thing as a "predominantly acoustically held [n], coherent [n] arch chansonartigem empathy, care and pop. In general, the accompaniment is often minimalist and restrained arranged move which Kramer texts in the foreground.

The lyrics, sung in Viennese style , are mostly about the inadequacies of daily life, about interpersonal or social rifts, about relationship stories and the depths of the human soul. Various publications often made comparisons with other famous lyricists and singer-songwriters such as Leonard Cohen , Georg Danzer , Bob Dylan or Jacques Brel , but most parallels were drawn with the songwriter Ludwig Hirsch .

occupation

reception

The album received almost exclusively positive reviews from critics and deeply praised by some publications. In a broadcast on the radio station Bayern 2, for example, a matter of perception was described as a "small milestone in Austrian songwriting art", classified by Falter as an "excellent debut album" and described by the Standard as a "touching work full of precise observations". According to some reviews, Kramer is a "master of reduction and compression" and a "legacy of the Austropop greats of the past", his songs have a "poetic power" and an "atmospheric magic".

“His melodies feel familiar, anchored in memory. His texts, which often revolve around interpersonal relationships, shine with their lapidary precision. They are unpretentious and substantial, observe without judging, appear neither precocious nor flat. On the touching debut there is a melancholy that has already made peace with itself. Sometimes with a dash of Viennese morbidity, sometimes with abuse. Thanks to the dialect and feeling for the language, that never sounds pathetic. "

- Amira Ben Saoud : Album review by Perception Matter in the Standard
