Walter Frey (doctor)

Walter Frey (born January 10, 1884 in Bern , † September 2, 1972 in Oberhofen am Thunersee ; resident in Basel ) was a Swiss internist .

Life

The son of a high school teacher studied medicine at the universities of Bern , Munich and Würzburg . He passed the state examination in Bern in 1907 and received his doctorate in 1908. He worked for a short time as a trainee with Hermann Sahli at the Medical University Clinic in Bern, but then switched to Dietrich Gerhardt in Basel as an assistant doctor . In 1910 he was with Franz Hofmeister in Strasbourg . In January 1912 he became an assistant doctor at Ludwig Lichtheim an der Königsberg , where he completed his habilitation and was promoted to senior physician in July of the same year . In 1914/15 he did active service as a medical officer in the Swiss Army (in Rudolf Minger's company ). After returning to Königsberg in 1915, he became the deputy chief physician of the Medical University Clinic under Alfred Schittenhelm , who was doing front-line service at the time. With this he moved to Kiel in 1916 , where he was appointed titular professor in the same year and associate professor in 1921 . In 1926 he became director of the city hospitals in Kiel. In 1928 he became chief physician in the internal department of the Katharinen Hospital in Stuttgart . From 1929 to 1954 he was a full professor for internal medicine at the University of Bern and director of the medical clinic at Inselspital . From 1932 to 1934 he was Dean of the Medical Faculty; In 1940/41 he was rector of the University of Bern. In 1941 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1950 he was elected chairman of the German Society for Internal Medicine .

Frey was a pioneer in cardiology : During his time in Kiel, Frey discovered quinidine as a drug for the treatment of atrial fibrillation .

He belonged to the Zofingia , where he wore the vulgo "laces".
