Walter Ibscher

Walter Ibscher (born July 13, 1926 in Laubusch ; † February 8, 2011 in Nuremberg ) was a German sculptor , graphic artist, medalist, restorer and art teacher.

Life

Walter Ibscher was born on July 13, 1926 as the second son of the master blacksmith Wilhelm and the tailor Frieda Ibscher, nee. Baensch born. Ibscher attended elementary school in Konradswaldau (Lower Silesia) / today Kondratów / Poland, where the family moved in 1930, from 1932 to 1940 .

His artistic talent was discovered by his father at an early age. In 1941, at the age of 15, he entered the renowned wood carving school in Bad Warmbrunn (Silesia) with a scholarship as the youngest student . Three years later, in April 1944, he completed his training with honors (master class student). Immediately after his apprenticeship, he was drafted into military service with the Schönberger Jäger (Sudetenland / now the Czech Republic) and a little later he was deployed as a soldier in south-west France. Captive and forced labor in southern France between 1945 and 1948.

From 1951 to 1957 Walter Ibscher studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg with Hans Wimmer (1907–1992). Between 1965 and 1970 he studied singing and phonetics with Robert Wippenbeck in Nuremberg, for opera and lied.

Since 1958 Walter Ibscher worked as a freelance sculptor, graphic artist and restorer in his adopted home Nuremberg . From 1960 to 1966 he was significantly involved in the restoration work on the Old Nuremberg Town Hall (Wolff'scher Building) and the Nuremberg Church of St. Jakob on behalf of the Germanic National Museum Nuremberg .

From 1973 to 2000 Ibscher worked as a specialist teacher for sculptural design at the state technical college in Nuremberg. Between 1988 and 2004 he also taught as a lecturer at the Georg Simon Ohm University of Applied Sciences in Nuremberg in the “Architecture” department for plastic art history, nudes and anatomy .

Ibscher's artistic fields of activity were sculpture, painting, drawing, stage design, sculpture, objects made of glass, textiles, gold and silver and ceramics, as well as photography.

Works

Walter Ibscher's extensive artistic work in public space was not only concentrated on the city of Nuremberg, but on the whole of Germany. His works are represented in private and public collections and museums around the world. He also made the human wooden sculptures in the garden of the Theresienkrankenhaus Nuremberg, the sandstone relief on the north facade of the Nuremberg Health Department and the children's playground in Almoshof Palace with a crocodile, block house and the slide with the four torture stakes .

As one of the first German artists after the Second World War, Ibscher was allowed to exhibit his works at the Goethe Institute in New York City . He presented his sculptures and graphics in other solo exhibitions in New York (1972), Paris , Biarritz and Graz (1972), and in group exhibitions in Munich (1961–1964), Ancona (1969), Monte Carlo (1969), Zurich (1972 ), London (1975), Rome (1976) as well as Copenhagen and Brussels .

Special exhibition:
