At 1304 m, the Wamberg is the highest elevation of the Wamberg saddle , a mountain range in the Werdenfelser Land . The Wamberg saddle stretches for around 8 km from the Partnach Gorge near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the west to the Klais district of the Krün municipality in the east. In the north, the predominantly wooded ridge is bordered by the valley of the Kankerbach and in the south by the valley of the Ferchenbach . Other peaks of the Wamberg saddle are the Eckbauer (1237 m), the Brauneck (1226 m), the Zotzenberg (1205 m) and the Hirzeneck (1186 m).

geology

The Wamberg saddle is part of an anticline ( Wamberg anticline ) that extends westward over the Partnachklamm into the Zugspitz area. Here clearly banked limestones of the Reifling Formation (formerly also known as Alpine Muschelkalk ) and clay marl as well as limestone layers of the somewhat younger Partnach Formation are tectonically unfolded. The harder rocks of the Reifling Formation build up the ridge of the Wamberg saddle, while the softer rocks of the Partnach Formations form its southern and northern flanks.

Giant old trees

Big maple near Wamberg

The supposedly strongestsycamoremaple inGermany, also known as "Wambergahorn", stands on the northern steep slope of the Wamberg approx. 200 m below the summit, directly on a forest path. The location is east of the village of Wamberg and south ofKaltenbrunn. The tree giant is best reached from the Elmauer Alm. A direct, but significantly wider, access from Wamberg (village) is also possible for experienced hikers.

The tree veteran, protected as a natural monument and entered in the list of distinctive and old tree specimens , is estimated to be 450–600 years old. Single specimens of the sycamore maple can live for over 500 years. In some publications, the monumental tree is described as the thickest maple in the country, with an alleged girth of over 9 m. However, a current measurement in 2013 showed a trunk circumference of 7.95 m at a height of 1.4 m and measured from the slope side. The base of the trunk, however, is much thicker. The height of the tree is approx. 26 m.

Sycamore maples on the Wamberg summit

On the forest-free summit area of the Wamberg, above the large maple on the Wamberg, there are some other thick old maple trees that are well worth seeing, including these tree veterans at an advanced age of around 300 years: one hollow, the thickest with a trunk circumference of 6.60 meters (measured 2020), one with a magnificent crown on the slope and one with an already severely reduced crown due to broken branches. All of them show strong deformations due to weather and age.

tourism

Well-known excursion destinations on the Wamberg-Saddle are:

  • the mountain inn "Eckbauer", to the one from Garmisch-Partenkirchen
  • the Eckbauerbahn , a gondola cable car, leads
  • the Elmauer Alm
