The winery Arndt F. Werner is a winery in Germany's Rheinhessen wine region . The family business has existed in Ingelheim am Rhein since 1819 and is one of the pioneers of organic viticulture .
history
In 1819, the postman and winery owner Johann Baptist Werner founded the family property in Nieder-Ingelheim on the medieval defensive wall in front of the Zuckertor in Mainzer Straße 97. The location next to the recently under French Prefecture developed de Route Charlemagne , the strategically important connection between Mainz and Bingen , was favorable for coaching .
In the sixth generation, Ferdinand Werner ran the business with three hectares of vineyards. While studying geography and geoecology, his son Arndt Ferdinand Werner dealt with ecological problems such as soil rinsing through erosion , fertilizer and pesticide residues in the groundwater and the extinction of beneficial insects in vineyards . As a consequence, the parents' winery was converted to organic viticulture between 1981 and 1983. The acreage was doubled for a constant yield. In 1983 Arndt Werner founded the first association of ecologically working winegrowers with Rhine-Hessian winegrowers and in 1985 the Federal Association of Ecological Viticulture . In 1988 Arndt Ferdinand Werner took over the management of the winery.
Since the 2004 vintage, predicate designations have been dispensed with.
In 2013 Werner acquired another area on Ingelheimer Schlossberg and planted it with Silvaner. The cultivated area increased from 11.5 to 13 hectares. In 2016, the company was expanded and part of the production was outsourced to a new building on the edge of the vineyards. The cellar and wine sales remained in the old estate. After completing his degree in viticulture at Geisenheim University , Thomas Werner joined the company as the eighth generation in the same year.
winery
The Werner winery cultivates 18 hectares of vineyards on loess-containing sandy soils in the Ingelheim vineyard locations Pares, Sonnenhang, Steinacker, Höllenweg, Burgberg and Horn des Mainz Berg . Some of the vines are over 60 years old. The white wines mature in stainless steel and the red wines in the old vaulted cellar in wooden barrels or in barriques . The annual production is 80,000 to 100,000 bottles.
The Werner winery is a “demonstration operation of the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection” . In Gault Millau it is rated with three grapes, in Eichelmann - Germany's wines with three stars. Arndt Ferdinand Werner is one of the pioneers of organic viticulture
Grape variety mirror
Around 60% red and around 40% white grape varieties are grown on around 18 hectares of vineyards . With 18% of the total vineyard area, Riesling is the main white grape variety. There are also some white Burgundy varieties (approx. 20%) such as Chardonnay , Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc . Red wines are Blauer Spätburgunder , Blauer Portugieser , Regent , Dornfelder , Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah as well as the Blauer Frühburgunder typical of Ingelheim .

Historical
- Mayor Johann Baptist Werner had the dilapidated town hall of Nieder-Ingelheim torn down in 1859. In the course of this, the registry and archive were relocated to his courtyard on Mainzer Straße, from where, according to historian Alexander Burger : they unfortunately did not return. Until 1862 the new town hall was built under his aegis , which today serves as an exhibition building.
- The manor house and outbuildings of the Werner winery are located on the listed site of the Ingelheimer Kaiserpfalz
