The 1996/97 Nordic Combined World Cup season began on November 22, 1996 in Rovaniemi, Finland, and ended on March 22, 1997 in Štrbské Pleso, Slovakia . During the season from February 21 to March 1, 1997, the Nordic World Ski Championships took place in Trondheim , Norway . For the first time, two sprints were held in addition to the individual races in the World Cup.

With his first two World Cup successes, the Finn Samppa Lajunen was able to win the overall World Cup ranking ahead of his compatriot Jari Mantila and the Norwegian Bjarte Engen Vik . For Mantila it was the second and last World Cup success of his career. In addition, Hannu Manninen was also able to win two World Cup victories for Finland .

The Norwegian Halldor Skard celebrated his only World Cup success in Steamboat Springs . The Austrian Mario Stecher with three wins, two second and one third place and the Swiss Andy Hartmann with his third place in Oslo ensured the German-speaking podium places . With his second place in Val di Fiemme , Andrea Longo was able to get the first podium for Italy .
