World Youth Day
The World Youth Day (abbreviation WYD or WYD for English. World youth day ) is organized by the Roman Catholic Church . The meeting for all youth and young adults between 14 and 30 years of age from all over the world is organized by the Pontifical Council for the Laity (part of the Curia ) and the host country. The meetings have their origins in an initiative of Pope John Paul II , who invited to Rome in 1984 for the “International Youth Jubilee” .
history
The event, initially planned as a one-off event, sparked such enthusiasm that Pope John Paul II took the United Nations' “Year of Youth” in 1985 as an opportunity to make World Youth Day a permanent fixture. Since then, it has taken place every year: every 2 to 3 years as an international World Youth Day, in the intervening years as regional World Youth Days in the individual dioceses . One of the co-founders is the then President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes , who prepared the meetings on Palm Sunday in 1984 and 1985. In the Holy Year 1975 there was already a youth meeting with Pope Paul VI on Palm Sunday . took place, but was celebrated by less than 20,000 participants.
Before each World Youth Day, the Pope publishes a message to young people in which he interprets the motto, among other things. For example, the motto of World Youth Day 2005 in Cologne was “Venimus adorare eum ( Mt 2.2 EU )” ( We have come to worship HIM ). Before each “big” World Youth Day, the World Youth Day Cross travels through the neighboring countries and the country where the youth meeting takes place. Since 2003, at the request of Pope John Paul II, the icon of Mary with the motif “Salus Populi Romani” from the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome has accompanied the cross.
Procedure and content
Every international World Youth Day is preceded by days of encounter . These days take place throughout the host country and offer the young people who are traveling to them an insight into everyday life and the culture of the host country.
After the days of the meeting, all pilgrims travel to the city where the actual World Youth Day takes place. The week-long event begins on Mondays with one or more opening services. On the following days, catecheses , church services , concerts , discussions, workshops , musicals and many other religious and cultural events are offered. These should correspond to the questions and concerns of young people and their content is geared towards the motto of World Youth Day.
The next central event is the greeting of the Pope on Thursday. On Friday there will be a Way of the Cross under the direction of the Pope through the city. For the evening prayer on Saturday evening for the night prayer vigil, known as the vigil , and for the closing mass on Sunday, the participants meet at a central place where they also spend the night. The closing service will be celebrated by the Pope, who will also announce the location of the next international World Youth Day.
International World Youth Days
So far there have been fifteen International World Youth Days. The first took place in Rome in 1986. It is referred to as the first international World Youth Day because the World Youth Day meetings in 1984 and 1985 took place in the context of other major events (for the "Holy Year of Redemption" and the "Year of Youth" of the UN). The official count includes the diocesan World Youth Days (which take place in Rome on Palm Sunday), so counts the consecutive years since 1986. The Youth Days of 1984 and 2000 took place in Rome in Holy Years . With the two precursors and the two official World Youth Days of 1986 and 2000, most of the World Youth Days so far have taken place in Rome. The closing service of World Youth Day 1995 in Manila is one of the largest gatherings in human history with over 4 million participants.
