Surname

It is often wrongly assumed that the name bridges comes from the fact that the place is on a bridge over the Kahl. The name has its origin from the word Bruch , which means swamp . In the Kahlgründer dialect the place is called "Bregge".

history

On July 1, 1862, the Alzenau district office was formed, with bridges on its administrative territory. In 1939, as everywhere in the German Reich, the designation district was introduced. Bridges now belonged to the Alzenau district in Lower Franconia (license plate ALZ). When the Alzenau district was dissolved in 1972, Brücken came into the newly formed Aschaffenburg district (license plate AB).

Until 1930 the place belonged ecclesiastically to Mömbris, which meant a walk to the service of almost an hour for the citizens, since then to the directly neighboring Niedersteinbach , which became an independent parish. Independently of this, the bridgeers had their own chapel since the 18th century.

Wendelinus Chapel

This half-timbered chapel, consecrated to Saint Wendelinus , which was built as a thank you to save from a cattle plague, is the most striking building in the town center. Wendelinus is the patron saint of the shepherds, and the chapel houses a statue of the saint with his characteristic attributes ( pilgrim's staff , ox, sheep). It was consecrated in 1905. Its bell was cast in 1910 in the Klaus brothers' bell and metal foundry ( Heidingsfeld ).

In 1955 it was plastered during a restoration, in 1968 the framework was exposed again and restored again in 1992–94.
