reception

The first reviewers particularly praised Triebel's performance and Schwochow's sensitive handling of German-German issues, but they also criticized various aspects of the film. While Ronnie Scheib in Variety criticized the psychological construction of the film character Nelly Senff as too unspecific and expressive, which means that West gets entangled in details, Kerstin Decker criticized in Tagesspiegel what she saw as the too sudden and all too harmonious end of the film. Andreas Kilb saw a film with a great leading actress in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , in which the literary original was not implemented dramatically enough. Dietmar Kanthak from epd Film praised the fact that the West is not just an exciting secret service thriller and documentary fiction, but rather parabolically tells of uprooting and loneliness, the adversity of a new beginning and the revival of dead feelings.
