Paderborn Challenge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Paderborn Challenge , until 2013 E.ON Westfalen Weser Challenge , is an international horse show that takes place in September on the Schützenplatz in Paderborn .

History and media

The tournament history has its origins in 1869, for this year the first records of horse racing events exist in Paderborn. At the “Race in the Stadtheide” in 1912, jumping competitions were held for the first time . Initially held on the parade ground in Stadtheide, from 1931 parts of the tournament took place on the grounds of the Neuhäuser Reiterkaserne.

After an interruption due to the Second World War, the tournament tradition continued on the Schützenplatz from 1949. After extremely successful tournaments in the 1960s and 1970s, a tournament was last held on the Schützenplatz in the early 1980s.

Beginning in 2003, another large horse show will be held on Paderborn's Schützenplatz. Initially held as a national tournament, the tournament is organized by the equestrian event agency EN GARDE Marketing from Uthlede and PST Paul Schockemöhle Marketing GmbH. The tournament was accompanied by the TV broadcaster XXP from 2003 to 2005 , and a summary was shown on Saturday and Sunday evenings as part of “XXP Horse Time”.

In 2003 and 2004 the Schützenplatz was rebuilt after initially only a quarter of the area was available as a riding arena due to the structure of the area. In 2006 there were changes in the tournament: Since this year the tournament has been advertised internationally, after the end of XXP, WDR television now took over the tournament broadcast, which took place on WDR and in the first program until 2011 . The German IPTV broadcaster ClipMyHorse has been broadcasting the tournament's exams live since 2012 .

The tournament has always been named after the main sponsor since 2003: in 2003 the tournament was initially called the PESAG Pader Challenge , after the company takeover in mid-2003 the tournament was called the E.ON Westfalen Weser Challenge . From 2006 to 2010 the tournament was held as a CSI 4 *, from 2011 it will be carried out as a CSI 3 *.

The special feature of the tournament is that it is held on the Schützenplatz. This square has the shape of a pear and is dominated in the middle by a horse chestnut tree with a height of around 20 meters and a crown diameter of 12 meters, which is said to be around 130 years old. The tree creates a special light and shadow situation on the square.

With the remunicipalisation of E.ON Westfalen Weser, the tournament lost its previous name and has been held under the name Paderborn Challenge since 2014.

The most important exams

Grand Prix

The Grand Prize is the most highly endowed test of the tournament. As early as 2003, still nationally advertised, the examination was endowed with € 30,000. Since 2006 the Grand Prix has also been a special stage of the Riders Tour . In 2018, the exam was endowed with around € 75,000.

The Grand Prix will be held on Sunday noon or afternoon. After the test was carried out as a jumping competition with jump-off in the first few years , it has been an international jumping competition with two rounds since 2011 .
