Wilfred is an American television series that premiered on June 23, 2011. It is based on the Australian SBS One series of the same name . The main role Ryan is played by Elijah Wood and the co-inventor Jason Gann is, as in the original, the eponymous dog Wilfred . The series was adapted by producer David Zuckerman on behalf of FX Network and started on June 23, 2011 on FX. In Germany, the series was first on the Pay TV transmitter ProSieben Fun broadcast. It has been broadcast on German free TV since June 2013 on ProSieben . The broadcast in the late evening program was canceled in 2014 due to poor audience ratings. In 2016, the episodes already shown were repeated in the night program and then the remaining episodes were broadcast.

action

Wilfred is about the young man Ryan and his neighbor's dog. At the beginning Ryan is suicidal and tries to kill himself in the first episode. Ryan's neighbor Jenna asks him shortly thereafter to look after her dog for a day. Ryan is amazed to see Wilfred as an Australian man in a dog costume, while everyone else in Wilfred sees just a normal dog.

He smokes cigarettes and marijuana , drinks beer, eats junk food and is prone to other vices. While Ryan and the audience see Wilfred as a man in a dog costume, everyone else sees him as a normal dog.
  • Jenna Mueller, Ryan's attractive neighbor and Wilfreds owner
  • Kristen Newman, Ryan's older and controlling sister

Minor characters

  • Spencer, the unfriendly and noisy neighbor
  • Drew, Jenna's obnoxious friend that Wilfred doesn't like

Emergence

Based on the critically acclaimed Australian television series of the same name, Wilfred was adapted on FX's behalf by Family Guy producer David Zuckerman and also produced by FX Productions. Executive producers are Zuckerman, Rich and Paul Frank, Jeff Kwatinetz and Joe and Ken Connor from the original Australian series. Wilfred co-inventor Jason Gann and Randall Einhorn serve as co-executive producers. Einhorn directed ten episodes of the first season and Victor Nelli, Jr. directed three. The pilot was shot in the summer of 2010, written by Zuckerman, and directed by Einhorn.

Compared to the Australian version - which equally focused on Wilfred, his owner and her boyfriend - the American version is presented as a buddy comedy between Wilfred and Ryan. After good ratings , the series was extended for a third season, which was broadcast from June 20 to September 20, 2013 on FX. The fourth and final season was broadcast from June 25 to August 13, 2014 on the US cable channel FXX .

Casting

The casting of Elijah Wood as Ryan was announced on June 29 of 2010. Ryan is described as "an introverted and troubled young man who struggles unsuccessfully to find his way in the world until he forges a special friendship with Wilfred, the neighbor's dog." The series co-inventor, Jason Gann, plays again the role of the eponymous dog Wilfred, a character described by Zuckerman as a mixed breed dog from " Labrador Retriever and Russell Crowe in a binge." Fiona Gubelmann plays Jenna, Wilfreds owner and Ryan's neighbor who works as a local news producer. Dorian Brown was also cast as Kristen, Ryan's controlling and condescending older sister.
