Wilhelm Kathol (born December 5, 1878 in Berlar , † January 11, 1951 in Meschede ) was a German architect and construction clerk who worked as a district master builder in Meschede.

Live and act

Wilhelm Kathol was born in Berlar as the son of the landowner Franz Kathol. After attending primary school in Berlar, he attended the Rector's School in Ramsbeck until 1893 . This was followed by activities in the construction industry in Grevenbroich , Hüsten and Gelsenkirchen . In 1898 he passed the final exam at the building trade school in Höxter . He then worked as an architect and site manager in Cologne and Witten . From 1904 Kathol attended the Dr. Cordgia in Hanover . In 1905 he passed the final exam at the secondary school in Lippstadt as an external student and then studied architecture at the Technical University of Hanover . He passed his main diploma examination in 1908 at the Technical University of Darmstadt . After working as a teacher at the building trade school in Zerbst and as an architect in Cologne, he became head of the newly founded district building authority in Meschede in 1910. He initially held the title of district builder and was later promoted to district building officer (before 1930) .

His most important buildings are the district building in Meschede and the advanced school in Fredeburg . Its architecture shows clear, harmonious forms and is often characterized as simple and beautiful .

The architectural influence of Kathol went beyond the state buildings. Characteristic of the rectory buildings around 1910/1914 is the dignified basic attitude with the reduction of the baroque quotations to proportion, axiality and roof shape (full hipped roof ). This architectural language was formulated to a large extent in the Sauerland by Wilhelm Kathol.

In 1933 the district building authority was closed on the following grounds: “It can no longer be justified that the district building authority is competing with private architects.” Wilhelm Kathol was retired on June 30, 1933 at the age of 55.
