Wilhelm Ludwig von Zollikofer

Wilhelm Ludwig von Zollikofer (also: Zollikofer-Altenklingen ) (born October 22, 1783 in Berlin , † January 31, 1868 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian general of the cavalry . He came from the Prussian line of the Swiss noble family Zollikofer von Altenklingen and was senior councilor at Altenklingen Castle in the canton of Thurgau .

His parents were the Prussian major general Friedrich Heinrich Wilhelm von Zollikofer (1737–1798) and his wife Anna Luise, née Habeck (1765–1819).

Military career

With a special permit from King Friedrich Wilhelm II, Zollikofer joined the regiment of the Gardes du Corps on February 1 as a standard squire , and his father was in command. There he was on 17 July 1798 Cornet , already on October 3, 1798 second lieutenant , and on Oct. 5, 1805 First Lieutenant . During the Fourth Coalition War he fought in the Battle of Auerstedt . On May 22, 1807 he was promoted to staff assistant master.

After the war, Zollikofer came to the Leibcompanie and from November 3, 1809 he received an allowance of 20 thalers as its leader. On June 4, 1811 he became a captain and company commander . During the Wars of Liberation , Zollikofer fought in the battles near Großgörschen , Bautzen , Dresden , Leipzig , Brienne , Paris and in the battles near Haynau and Fère-Champenoise . On May 17, 1813, he became a major and on October 17, 1815, a lieutenant colonel . In Leipzig he received the Iron Cross II class and the Order of St. Vladimir IV class.

On December 10, 1816, Zollikofer was appointed commander of the 6th Cuirassier Regiment (Brandenburgisches) and on October 22, 1820 was accepted into the Order of St. John . On March 30, 1821, he was promoted to colonel with a patent from April 4, 1821 . In 1825 he received the service cross , on August 15, 1826 the Russian Order of St. Anne II. Class with diamonds and on June 20, 1829 the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus II. Class. On September 4, 1830, he was commissioned to lead the 7th Cavalry Brigade and on February 10, 1832, he was appointed commander of this large unit . In this capacity, he was promoted to major general on March 30, 1832.

On June 8, 1838, Zollikofer received the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus, First Class. With his promotion to lieutenant general on April 7, 1842, he was appointed commandant of Breslau. On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in service, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV paid tribute to him on March 4, 1847 by awarding him the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves. On March 4, 1848, Zollikofer was put up for disposal as a general of the cavalry with a pension . He died on January 31, 1868 in Potsdam.

Zollikofer married on June 18, 1811 in Danzin (Köslin district) Elisabeth Christiane Johanne von Borcke (* August 30, 1790; † December 1, 1812). After her death on December 29, 1815 in Domslau, he married Charlotte Henriette Adelheid Ida von Tschirschky and Bögendorff (* October 9, 1797, † November 16, 1846) from the Schlanz family. She was the daughter of Major Karl Konrad Leopold Joachim von Tschirschky and Bögendorff and his wife Charlotte Henriette, née von Reichel. The marriage of the two was divorced and she married the Rittmeister Heinrich Emil von Arnim on January 1, 1835 (* December 8, 1802, † May 13, 1880). In their third marriage, Zollikofer was married to Nanny von Meyerinck (* February 1, 1811 - January 4, 1880), daughter of Heinrich von Meyerinck , since December 7, 1834 .
